I talk a lot about leadership because it really excites me. Usually, I connect it to work stuff, but today I want to talk about leadership in life.
This last year was super tough. My wife got diagnosed with breast cancer. She went through surgery, lost her hair, and had a really hard time with the chemotherapy and radiation treatments. But even through all of that, she kept going to our kids' games, got elected to the school board, and never stopped leading at her job. She showed us all how to keep going, no matter what. As a leader, in every facet of her life, she continued to lead, in the midst of it all!
And now, she's beaten cancer. We both are beyond happy!
When I finally got a chance to stop and reflect, I had to walk through what the past 12 months actually looked like, and not only what they looked like, but what was experienced and how that translated to the lessons learned. There are so many takeaways from the last 12 months, and plenty of lessons learned, but some specific lessons really stood out to me.
I learned that my wife’s experience offers such great evidence of the fact that leadership isn't just for work. It's about facing hard stuff and keeping on, showing others how it's done. From my vantage point, my wife displayed real leadership and courage, in so many inspirational ways, and the entire process showed evidence of those facts throughout.
Leadership life lesson? Here we go!
My wife taught me this lesson over the course of the last 12 months as she fought her battle against cancer.
Leadership can take place in the boardroom, at home with your family, on the baseball field, the basketball court, the reality is, leadership exists in every walk of life when you are a leader.
A leader is a leader, whenever and wherever they are.
