🇧🇮 The crises Burundi has faced during its history have subjected the population to turmoil and displacement, and compromised development progress. The ravages of climate change and environmental degradation are compounding these challenges. UNDP has been present in Burundi for almost 50 years, during which time it has earned the trust of national stakeholders for its support to national development priorities. During the 2019-2023 programme cycle, UNDP has focused on inclusive growth, especially at the local level, support to decentralization, access to services, rule of law and strengthening community resilience to environmental shocks. Successes have notably involved support to local economies and to some extent the inclusion of vulnerable and marginalized groups, but structural and resource mobilization and transfer challenges have hampered progress. UNDP is well positioned to play a catalytic role in Burundi, helping to strengthen national institutions while also responding to government requests to provide local-level support. Our just-concluded evaluation sets out five recommendations for UNDP Burundi’s next programme cycle, to better assert its potentially catalytic role and maximize its contribution to improving the lives and livelihoods of the people of Burundi. 🔗 Read the full report in French or English here: https://lnkd.in/ejAhSuD4

#FYI : The 37th Ordinary Africa Union Head of States Summit kicked of this morning at the AUC Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for the next 2 days 17- 18 February2024. The summit follows the successful 44th Executive council of the union that took place on the 15-16 February, same venue. The summit is taking place amidst diverse challenges facing the continent and ofcourse opportunities too. Main points includes, Climate Change discussed at the #CAHOSCC, this morning, the conflicts in DR Congo, the situation in the Sahel, reports on the implementation of the reform process of the Africa Union Commission, implementation of the #MalaboDeclaration on agriculture on the continent, the adoption of the new Ten years implementation plan of #agenda2063, the new theme of the year, diverse appointments and other very important matters. The adoption of a resolution on the new #GreatGreenWallInitiative strategy & Ten years implementation Framework is also amongst the opportunities to be endorsed and adopted.

Ethiopia will require billions of dollars in financing over the next quarter of a century to effectively address the impacts of climate change, according to the Country Climate & Development Report (CCDR). Released by the World Bank last week, the report depicts a grim scenario, predicting a combination of reduced agricultural productivity, damage to infrastructure, economic growth setbacks and increased poverty levels, if substantial reforms worth nearly 27.6 billion dollars are not implemented. We work with our partners to help Ethiopian pastoralists and agro-pastoralists develop and implement practices that enable them to rehabilitate and use degraded land effectively and sustainably ♻ . These practices are informed and continuously refined by research and require the active engagement of the academic community. Earlier this month, the Ministry of Agriculture, Ethiopia organised a workshop with the support of GIZ Ethiopia and Djibouti , bringing together researchers, regional partners, implementing partners, and GIZ experts. 🤝💡   The workshop focused on ways of integrating previously conducted research into central and accessible databases as well as teaching modules. It also served as a forum to identify ways of mainstreaming the Dry Valley Rehabilitation and Productive Use (DVRPU) approach. Exchanges like this are foundational to shaping a future in which sustainable practices and research go hand in hand.
