In 2023, an estimated 733 million people faced hunger worldwide, marking a nearly 20% increase since 2019. Additionally, 2.33 billion people experienced moderate to severe food insecurity, with over 864 million of these individuals suffering from severe food insecurity, meaning they ran out of food at times during the year. Despite these alarming figures, a world without hunger is possible. The upcoming World Without Hunger Conference (#WWHC) will explore critical topics, investment opportunities, and solutions for post-harvest loss reduction and agro-industrialization. As the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (#UNIDO), we aim to leverage cutting-edge technologies and expert knowledge to create lasting impacts on global food systems and drive meaningful progress toward eradicating hunger. Speaking on behalf of UNIDO at the G20 Development Ministerial Meeting, Cecilia Ugaz Estrada emphasized the crucial role of industry in creating a world without hunger: “With the advanced knowledge and technology that is already available to us, we can optimize resource use and efficiency, create unprecedented access to healthy, nutritious food, and generate decent jobs at the same time.” Let this serve as a call to action for all stakeholders to unite and turn our shared vision into reality. 👉 Find more information here: https://lnkd.in/daPDdGJU | African Union | Ethiopian Ministry of Industry(የኢፌዴሪ ኢንዱስትሪ ሚኒስቴር) | FAO | #WorldWithoutHunger #ZeroHunger #SDGs #GlobalGoals #EndHunger #WWHC2024 #AWorldWithoutHungerIsPossible

This week we're working alongside SDG2 Advocacy Hub FAO Ação da Cidadania and others to shine a light on the global food crisis. The United Nations' annual State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report - out today - shows hunger levels remain stubbornly high, with 733 million people suffering due to conflict, climate change and economic stresses. This is not inevitable. There is enough food. There are proven solutions. It's not OK that countries are crippled with post-pandemic debt burdens that drain resources away from social programmes. As Brazil formally announces its Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty at G20 meetings in Rio today, it's time for the world to welcome its leadership, up its game and address this in a coordinated way. This excellent piece from Lilia Sebouai on the Telegraph's Global Health Security team explains. #SOFI2024 #globalfoodcrisis #G20 #foodsecurity

Yesterday in #Rio, #SOFI2024 report revealed that 733 million people suffered from hunger in 2023. It is unacceptable that global hunger is continuing to rise in 2024 despite the availability of solutions. This stark reality underscores the urgent need for action. We join #HungryforAction in calling on #G20 governments to step up their efforts and take decisive actions to end the #globalfoodcrisis. We cannot afford to see more #emptyplates when there are practical steps and resources that can be mobilized to ensure food security for all. With only six years to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially #SDG2 on ending all forms of hunger and #malnutrition, let's advocate for policies and initiatives that prioritize food security, empower vulnerable communities, and address the root causes of hunger. Last week, we asked if you know how many people worldwide faced hunger in 2023? The answer is 1 in 11, according to the latest State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report by five specialized UN agencies. If current trends continue, about 582 million people will be chronically undernourished in 2030, half of them in Africa. “Transforming agrifood systems is more critical than ever as we face the urgency of achieving the SDGs within six short years. FAO remains committed to supporting countries in their efforts to eradicate hunger and ensure food security for all. We will work together with all partners and with all approaches, including the G20 Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, to accelerate the needed change. Together, we must innovate and collaborate to build more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems that can better withstand future challenges for a better world," said FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu. I am motivated by #Hope of a better, fairer, peaceful, safer, equal and healthier #future – for our #people and our #MotherEarth.
Nearly 890 million people around the world went hungry last night. The current multiple global conflict and war could make that number grow by another 95 million people by the end of this year. This planet has never faced a #hunger emergency like this. To permanently end hunger, the world needs a #foodsystem that can feed every person, every day, everywhere; that can raise real #incomes of the poorest people; that can provide #safe food and adequate #nutrition; and that can better steward the world's natural #resources. Urgently, we need a food system that is more #resilient and that shifts from being a major contributor to #ClimateChange to being part of the #solution. All these aspects are closely interlinked, calling for a more comprehensive approach to delivering a healthier and more prosperous #future. The journey out of hunger for millions of people can come to a long-awaited end if we also create the #political and moral will to do so and we act strategically by nourishing lives, empowering #communities, providing emergency #relief during #crisis and growing the movement to #endhunger. #SDG2 #SDGs World Food Programme FAO International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Mercy Corps Oxfam International The World Bank Welthungerhilfe (WHH) The Hunger Project UN Sustainable Development Group USAID United Nations African Union The World Bank

Professor, Economic and Technological Change at Center for Development Research (ZEF) Bonn University, Germany President, Pontifical Academy of Sciences, The Vatican
New study on costs of ending hunger (SDG2) by J. von Braun, B. Chichaibelu, D. Laborde, M. Torero Cullen and H. Baumüller: As a result of recent developments including growing conflicts, the climate crisis and economic slowdowns and the lack of concerted global action, achieving SDG2 (Zero Hunger) by 2030 seems increasingly infeasible. Reaching the G7 nations’ commitment of lifting 500 million people out of hunger and malnutrition by 2030 has become almost twice as expensive compared to taking action four years ago. If Zero Hunger is to become a reality, short-term interventions will need to be combined with long-term investments that can have a lasting impact beyond 2030. The ZEF study estimates that these measures would require additional investments of USD 21 billion annually to end hunger by 2040. Between 691 million and 783 million people faced hunger in 2022. At the same time, record-high food prices reduced purchasing power and access to food, negatively impacting food security and nutritional outcomes. The food system is under pressure from climate change through increasing temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and greater frequency of some extreme events. It is projected that almost 600 million people will be chronically undernourished in 2030, pointing to the immense challenge of achieving the SDG target 2 to eradicate hunger. If we don’t take urgent actions, our world and our future generations will pay the price. UNDP plays an important role in integrating the #SDGs, aligning efforts related to food security, sustainability, and development, working to ensure policies in these areas are coherent and well-coordinated. We often understand well the solutions, but they need to be implemented at scale, in a collaborative effort between all stakeholders: governments, farmers, local populations, food companies and civil society. LLDCs such as Zambia require urgent support due to their inherent vulnerabilities, including limited access to markets, hindering their ability to sell products and purchase essential inputs, and higher vulnerability to climate change, exacerbated by inadequate infrastructure and transportation networks These challenges necessitate targeted assistance to enhance their food systems, build resilience, and promote sustainable development. Support from FAO and other organisations is crucial to help LLDCs overcome the unique constraints and address issues of food security, poverty, and climate change.
