More cooperation in favour of cotton producers in Africa: the WTO and several other organizations pledge to work together, aiming to boost West Africa's cotton and textiles production capacity. The signature took place on 26 June on the sidelines of the #Aid4Trade Global Review.
UNIDO’s Deputy Director General and Managing Director Cecilia Ugaz Estrada participated in the #G20 Development Ministerial Meeting and the G20 Ministerial Meeting on the establishment of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty organized by the Brazilian Presidency. Ugaz Estrada conveyed UNIDO’s and Director General Gerd Müller’s “strongest support for this game-changing initiative, which can make a major contribution to creating a world without hunger”, stressing the importance of industry as “part of the solution” in ending hunger and poverty. The first Call-for-Proposals of the Accelerate-to-Demonstrate (A2D) Facility was announced by Director General Gerd Müller and Corinne Kitsell, Ambassador at the United Kingdom Mission to the United Nations, at an event attended by more than 400 participants. #UNIDO's new Facility, supported by the #UK Government with an initial funding of £65 million, aims to accelerate the commercialization of innovative clean #energy solutions in developing countries by providing grant support for the implementation and operation of demonstration projects with catalytic and scalable potential, focusing on critical minerals, clean #hydrogen, smart energy and industrial decarbonization. In their remarks during the event, the Chairs of the African, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Asia and the Pacific Regional Groups highlighted the importance of investing in innovative technologies for clean energy transitions and industrial decarbonization in their respective regions. 🌍 Since 2018, the EU-funded West Africa Competitiveness Programme (#WACOMP), co-implemented by UNIDO, has boosted producers in #WestAfrica by enhancing quality infrastructure and competitiveness. 📈 In The Gambia, onion curing and storage facilities were built to cut post-harvest losses. Ghana’s Standards Authority received support for cosmetic product certification. 📊Guinea saw support for its National Industrial Development Policy. Sierra Leone’s cocoa farmers benefited from tool banks, school farms, and nurseries. 3wDear all, Great contributions made by all the delegations and the WTO DG. Your concerns are thought provoking with huge task to coordinate trade between diverse countries. In my recent research 🔬 on EPAs in Africa. Over 50 years of Africa’s trade we are on the same agenda on trade and development agenda in Africa. One of the questions I argue in my study concerns the effectiveness of Aid for trade and value chains in intra-African trade. So which other mechanisms would be much more important in Africas trade than policy complimentary in trade policy in Africa ?
