Today, on the International Day of Human Space Flight, we celebrate the beginning of the space era and reaffirm our commitment to the peaceful use and exploration of outer space! With our Space Security Programme, established in 2022, we strive to address the growing challenges and global security implications related to the space environment. From analyzing threats to space systems to fostering cross-sector dialogue and gender-inclusive discussions on space security, our programme aims to build knowledge, awareness, and trust in the international sphere. We're proud of our accomplishments, including the launch of tools like the Lexicon for Space Security and the Space Security Portal, as well as organizing events like the Outer Space Security Conference and regional dialogues. As we look to the future, our commitment to space security remains steadfast. We're excited to announce upcoming projects such as the digital Lexicon tool, Threats and Risks Mapping, and the Space Security Verification and Monitoring toolbox, which will further enhance transparency and accessibility in space security. Let's continue working together to build a more secure world and ensure that outer space remains a peaceful domain. Happy International Day of Human Space Flight! ATCO at Spanish Air and Space Force I Master's Degree in Research on Peace, Security and Defense I Professional Master's Degree in Air Navigation Services Management I
"Despite the high expectations created by the initiation of the process, the final session of the #OEWG was eventually not conclusive. The Group was #not only unable to reach #consensus on recommendations, but participants did not even adopt a procedural report, a document which merely states that the OEWG met on certain dates and specifies who was in attendance. This #failure is emblematic of the political differences that increasingly divided United Nations Member States. (…) The international context and diverging #interests, especially among major spacefaring nations, currently lead to incompatible positions resulting in the inability to event adopt a procedural report. (…) Despite not being able to reach a formal consensus, efforts to develop norms and standards of responsible behaviour for #space 🚀 activities have gained some momentum." The challenge of Space Security will only increase in importance. Europe urgently needs to accelerate the development of its own capabilities to monitor, verify and act on space security and to reinforce its position at the negotiation table. Europe furthermore should strengthen its diplomatic efforts to cooperate with countries outside the continent.
