⏩ Last month we took our support for Pride to the streets by becoming the official sponsor of local Pride parades in two key countries where our bank operates: Germany and Italy.
🌈 This sponsorship is a concrete testimony of our commitment to the LGBTQIA community and the spirit of Pride Month, a commitment we share alongside our Employee Networks Unicorns, who bring boundless enthusiasm and passion to the cause.
🎙 While we were at the parade in Milan, we asked other supporters what PRIDE means to them. Watch their answers and tell us in the comments if you agree.

Pride Month is a time to celebrate and honor the LGBTQIA community, recognizing the impact and contributions of its members. Many organizations, including credit unions, often show support for Pride Month through various initiatives, events, and advocacy efforts.
Credit unions, being community-focused financial institutions, often prioritize inclusivity and diversity. During Pride Month, some credit unions may launch special campaigns to raise awareness about LGBTQIA issues, offer financial services tailored to the needs of LGBTQIA individuals and families, or support local LGBTQIA organizations through donations or partnerships.
Additionally, credit unions may use Pride Month as an opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for both employees and members, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. This might include implementing non-discrimination policies, providing LGBTQIA sensitivity training, or participating in Pride parades and events.
Overall, Pride Month provides credit unions with a chance to demonstrate their support for equality, diversity, and inclusion while also engaging with and giving back to the LGBTQIA community.

Pride Month?! When will we get our month?!
In 2024, the importance of LGBTQ Pride in the UK remains as vital as ever. Not only as a celebration of identity and love, but also as crucial platforms for visibility, advocacy, community building, and so much more.
I am proud to say BTP has taken part in Pride in London, and many other events across the UK for a number of years now. Visibility and engagement are powerful tools in combating ignorance and prejudice. Pride events showcase the diversity within the LGBTQ community, providing a space where individuals can see themselves reflected and celebrated. This includes me and my colleagues at BTP and across many public service organisations represented at Pride in London today.
As the Chief Superintendent responsible for policing the London Underground and railway throughout London and South East England, I believe it’s essential for me and my team to be a part of Pride in London. I was hugely proud to march with colleagues today through the streets of London, wearing our Text 61016 BTP t-shirts reminding everyone to ‘See it, Say It, Sorted!”.
Some people will still ask why we take part in Pride. First and foremost, our primary duty is to ensure that everyone using our transport network feels safe and secure. It’s important that we are approachable, we show we care, and that we will take reports of LGBTQ Hate crime as seriously as any other crime. Sadly, we know from research conducted by London TravelWatch that many LGBTQ people do not feel safe using public transport, or approaching the police about incidents, in London.
One in five LGBTQ people they spoke to experienced hate crime in the past year while travelling on public transport in the capital.
The majority of respondents change their behaviour or appearance to ‘fit in’ so they avoid abuse or harassment when travelling in the capital.
Many LGBTQ people they spoke to have little confidence, or trust in the police, so incidents on London’s public transport network often go unreported.
You can read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eUNEjVEB
We know that trust in policing is at a low point right now, and that this is particularly true for LGBTQ people. I entirely get why that is, but along with my colleagues we are absolutely committed to rebuilding relationships. I believe that participating in Pride sends a powerful message that we, as a police force, stand for equality and inclusion. It’s not just about being there; it’s about showing genuine support and solidarity. When our officers march alongside the LGBTQ community, we highlight our dedication to fighting discrimination and promoting a more inclusive society.
I am proud to lead police staff, officers, and volunteers who are committed to our values and who strive to embody them every day.
If you think you’ve got what it takes, I’d encourage you to check out our vacancies here: https://lnkd.in/ez6XPSrN
Loved holding space for the second WE CREATE SPACE#QueerWomenInBusiness meet up alongside Sevi K. 🏳🌈#lesbianvisibilityweek. We also had wonderfully vulnerable and candid moderation from the ever inspiring Sanjukta Moorthy and Shimar Guyo! Thanks to WeWork Barcelona for providing such a gorgeous setting for the night.
The big emerging theme of the evening seemed to be coming out at work, how this impacts your career, the complicated nature of this and whether we even felt obligated to do so. As someone who is often just assumed to be queer, "coming out" per se doesn't necessarily feel like an option for me, people have usually already made their mind up about me. However I am still impacted by that sense of anxiety in any new environment, I'm thinking about what those judgements might be, how they are shaping how I'm being treated?
Even in those moments when I do first mention that I'm queer, thus confirming those assumptions, I am conscious of whether that shifts how someone was treating me, or their perception of my ability to do my job. It can be incredibly nerve-wracking and draining.
On the other hand tho, there is incredible power in being able to state my identity, unapologetically, regardless of the response. I didn't (and don't) always feel able to do so, so when I do, I know that whatever happens next, I have shown up as my true self. If that means a working relationship changes for the worse, then that person has shown their true colours even more so than I have.
Coming out as a queer person in the workplace is always an individual choice, and will vary according to context. Always consider your safety and the potential impact this could have for you. But ultimately, if you are able to do so, I hope you find that you find some relief and even empowerment in just being able to show up as you!
Creating Space for #QueerWomeninBusiness. 🏳️🌈
We had another QWIB meet up last night, this time at WeWork Barcelona!
We discussed breaking generational and intersectional biases, the pros and cons of coming out at work and how to resolve funding issues in Queer entrepreneurship. ⚖️
A big thank you to our guests Sanjukta Moorthy and Shimar Guyo for sharing your inspirational stories, Yassine and Sevi for hosting, and to everyone who turned out and took part in the conversation!
We hope you made some fulfilling connections and enjoyed the conversation as much as we did. 🌱

Banking can be stressful for LGBTQ people. It can be hard to tell whether a bank will discriminate against same-gender couples, misgender trans customers, or make the name-changing process difficult. Along with Sophia Acevedo, I've written about what LGBTQ people should look for when choosing a new bank to make sure their banking experience is smooth.
Many thanks to Brian Thompson, JD, CFP® and Leo Aquino for lending their expert guidance to this article!
“Asking people around you is really the best way to learn about how certain banks or certain organizations treat LGBTQ people,” says Thompson.
“Making things gender neutral and not assuming that everyone is in a heteronormative relationship when it comes to dealing with banking, that’s the baseline” of what banks should do when working with LGBTQ customers, says Aquino.
