ANYONE UP FOR A GAME?
This week I had the opportunity to play at the golf tournament of UniCredit Bank CZ & SK.
Golf is quite a unique sport. Along with playing, you can spend time talking to people. And it has more parallels to business than one would think.
1. You have to play smarter, not harder. In each case, smarter first. Then harder. The lighter the swing with better technique, the longer and more accurate the shots. And the harder the swing, usually the worse the result. Don't take me wrong, the swing has to be properly timed, well executed, with energy, swiftness... But do not use force unless you are in a very deep rough ;)
2. Let go of your ego. Yeah, we all imagine the best possible shot. Playing with the wood right on the green, playing the longest iron we have in the bag, doing a magical draw shot with exactly the curve we want to pass that dog leg... But no, that's not how the game is played. It's not about your biggest opportunity, it's about your biggest risk. It's not about the best shots in your life. It's about consistency.
Choose the club you can hit reasonably well. Aim well. Factor in the hazards along the way and consider the worst possible outcome.
3. Communication and joy of the game. You play with people. That means - emotions are healthy. If you are nervous, don't fight it, accept it. However, you are responsible for your thoughts. And for your energy towards others. The purpose of the game can vary with each of us. For some it is the beat possible result, for some it's to play a game they'd be happy with. But all of us have one wish in common - to enjoy the game. You get an amazing opportunity to know great people, share your experience, build friendships and relationships. Isn't that what life is about in the end?
Thank you Ivan Vrbjar for the invitation. And thank you Zdenko Hoschek and Martin Kompan for great game!
