Are whales the key to #climatechange? Whales capture enormous amounts of #carbon in their feeding practices, then when they die and store carbon in their bodies at the bottom of the ocean. Climate change is not like a meteor set to destroy our planet. It's an ongoing process hurting people, animals, and the land globally. My recent work with The Solutions Project discusses the importance of climate solutions. When discussing solutions, we must humanize the people behind the solutions and the ongoing processes within our communities. Too many times, people who are marginalized, composed of Black, Indigenous, and POC, are not seen as leaders or experts in climate solutions, which further harms our cultural identities and the contributions our ancestors have made to the movement. In my latest video, we talk about the importance of climate justice solutions and why people must adopt climate justice frameworks to be intersectional in their movement building. Worth listening to these survivor stories, however, now we need to start hearing stories from around the world. Yes, the US is being impacted, but so is everyone else, and if we want people in wealthy nations to care, we need global stories, especially from the Global South. To help avert the climate crisis, let's engage more people by communicating smarter. This study by Dominic Packer & Jay Van Bavel, PhD provides some great insights on how to talk about the climate crisis. Here are some of my takeaways. * "Doom and Gloom" messaging is terribly ineffective for motivating action, but great for encouraging shares on social media. Fear (like misery) likes company, but can lead to mass paralysis. * "Binding moral foundations" (e.g. "Lets keep our rivers clean") is highly effective for motivating climate action. We should of course consider the values and ethics of others. For example, progressives tend to value social justice (i.e. "climate action helps protect the vulnerable). Conservatives tend to respect authority and value purity. ("Lets support King Charles to restore Britain's forests) * "Letter to the future generations" (e.g. writing to your child or grandchild about how how you are working now to ensure they have a hospitable planet) is great in encouraging support for pro-climate policies. 📣 Let's talk about the correlation between modern day slavery and climate change. ➕ The intersectionality between modern slavery and climate change reveals a complex relationship that exacerbates vulnerability and exploitation. 🌊 Climate change impacts disproportionately marginalized communities, pushing them into desperate circumstances. 🙅🏽♂️ This heightened vulnerability makes them targets for human trafficking and forced labor. ❌ Environmental degradation can also drive economic instability, leaving people more susceptible to trafficking and exploitation. ✅ Addressing both modern slavery and climate change requires a comprehensive approach that recognizes their interconnectedness and prioritizes the protection of vulnerable populations. #GFEMS #EndModernSlavery #EndHumanTrafficking #ClimateCrisis #ClimateChange #ClimateAction

We don't say it enough, but all issues are intersectional. The meat you eat contributes to GHG emissions and pours animal waste into our oceans. War results in displacement of people and more resources needed to rebuild cities. Harming people and animals is harming ourselves. Helping people and animals is helping ourselves. “Infuriating, depressing, overwhelming.” “Hopeless and broken.” “What the f*ck do we have to do to get through to people how bad this really is?” “We live in an age of fools.” Not the words I wanted to share with you this morning. But when I saw the despair that emerges from this survey of climate scientists, I had to share it with as many of you as possible. I know it’s depressing. But do read the article. The only way to overcome a problem is to understand it. But I won’t leave you without hope. Because there is hope. 1️⃣ Mass deaths will occur if we continue on the *same track* – we can change track 2️⃣ A *lack of political will* and *vested interests* are behind climate inaction – vote for the Greens and stop buying their sh*t! 3️⃣ Shun capitalism – higher, faster, bigger, louder got us here. It’s time to nip that sh*t in the bud 4️⃣ Back the kids – from youth climate activists to student protestors, young people are putting aside self-interest and putting their elders to shame.
