In collaboration with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and on behalf of Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), we are supporting refugees in Mozambique to regain an economic and social foothold in their new communities. But how can this be achieved? 💼 Work creates the groundwork: Work is not only the basis for starting a new life, it is also the key to integration. That's why we organise business training for refugees. The training courses are precisely targeted at the local labour market and help to build new careers that are successful in the long term. 🤝 Social cohesion: Welcoming refugees also raises huge challenges for the host communities. To ensure successful integration on a social level, we advise community representatives and raise awareness for potential conflicts. 🛡️ Protection and support: Many refugees have experienced trauma. That is why we offer psychosocial support to people who have been forced to leave their homes, advocate for gender equality and train community representatives to prevent gender-based violence.

When we add to this context the challenge of being refugees, the situation becomes even more precarious. African LGBTQIA refugees often face multiple forms of oppression and marginalization. They are forced to flee their homes due to persecution for their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. When they arrive in host countries, they often encounter inadequate or even hostile support systems. It is essential that we recognize that every individual deserves to live with dignity and security, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity or nationality. As the violence against queer refugees escalates in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya, it's imperative that we rally together to address the urgent need for protection and support for these vulnerable individuals. With over 300 queer refugees enduring unimaginable forms of violence, it's clear that the current situation is untenable. From physical assaults to verbal abuse, queer refugees in Kakuma face a daily onslaught of discrimination and brutality. The very essence of their identities makes them targets for violence and persecution. This cannot continue. The recent decision of many queer refugees to leave the camp and seek refuge in South Sudan highlights the dire circumstances they face. While fleeing may seem like the only option, the challenges and risks associated with relocating to South Sudan cannot be understated. With ongoing conflict and instability, South Sudan presents its own set of dangers and uncertainties. It is deeply disheartening that the Kenyan government and the UNHCR Kenya have not done enough to ensure the safety and well-being of queer refugees in Kakuma. The lack of adequate protection and support is not only a failure of their duty but also a violation of the fundamental rights of these individuals. We must come together to demand action. We must call upon the Kenyan government and the UNHCR to prioritize the safety of queer refugees in Kakuma. This includes implementing measures to prevent violence, providing comprehensive support services, and ensuring access to legal protection. Furthermore, it's essential to address the root causes of discrimination and prejudice against queer individuals. Education, awareness, and advocacy are key components of creating a more inclusive and accepting environment for all refugees, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. As we stand in solidarity with queer refugees in Kakuma, let us not forget the inherent dignity and humanity of every individual. Let us amplify their voices, advocate for their rights, and work tirelessly until they are no longer forced to live in fear. The time for action is now. I am reaching out to shed light on an important movement that demands our attention and support. In recent times, there has been a massive movement of LGBTQI refugees and asylum seekers from Kakuma Refugee Camp to South Sudan in search of safety and protection. Unfortunately, the Government of Kenya has not been able to provide the necessary protection that the LGBTQI community rightfully deserves. This movement is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by LGBTQI individuals who, despite seeking refuge, still confront discrimination and danger. The decision to embark on this journey to South Sudan is not taken lightly but is fueled by the necessity for a safer environment and the basic human right to live free from persecution. As a global community, we must acknowledge the struggles faced by LGBTQI refugees and asylum seekers and work towards fostering inclusivity and understanding. We must support initiatives that advocate for their rights and safety. Part 1: This year’s UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency Global Consultations with NGOs focused on Solutions, Inclusion, and Gender Equality. UNHCR High Commissioner His Excellency (HE) #FilippoGrandi emphasized the need for increased collaboration and the inclusion of diverse voices to expand opportunities for refugees, forcibly displaced, and stateless persons. HE Grandi highlighted that gender equality is a top priority for UNHCR. The challenges of gender inequality and gender-based violence have been further exacerbated by ongoing wars, conflicts, the climate crisis, and the COVID-19 pandemic. In response, the UNHCR Regional Consultations in 2023 have prioritized the protection of vulnerable groups, inclusion in decision-making, and the empowerment of women-led organizations. I am grateful for the opportunity to speak and present my intervention (video uploaded) during the opening plenary representing the voices of over 75 member organisations from Refugee Communities Association of Australia and individuals with lived experiences commend and congratulate UNHCR for its significant progress since 2010, when only 10 refugees attended the NGO Consultations. Today, after continued advocacy and persuasion by the people of lived experience and refugees, systemic changes have occurred in the UNHCR that is evidenced by significant increase in the number of refugee delegates and Refugee Led Organizations (RLOs) involved in all forms of UNHCR engagement. It is heartwarming to see NGOs and partner organizations opening up to include individuals with lived experiences and refugees in their operations, demonstrating a willingness to learn and engage. The advocacy efforts over the years have paid off, as refugee communities across the regions have noticed a paradigm shift.
