Over 11,000 government employees in Saudi Arabia left their jobs in the first quarter of 2024, as reported by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development. The data reveals that over 9,400 men and 2,100 women resigned. While most of the employees who left were Saudi nationals, there were also departures from countries such as Syria, Pakistan, Egypt, and the Philippines. I have often wondered since I began working in the humanitarian sector why, in Syria, humanitarian organizations must be based in Erbil (Iraq), Amman (Jordan), and Turkey. A grant is allocated for Syria, which includes all these offices, but the implementation of activities falls on the Syria office. Despite the work, risks, and fatigue that come with fieldwork, the field team receives minimal compensation. The external offices in Erbil, Amman, and Turkey mainly focus on coordination and reporting. How can this be justified when the fieldwork requires significant effort and commitment, yet the offices in Erbil, Amman, and Turkey receive higher salaries for coordination tasks?
