#Floods are harsh and disastrous but manageable. We’re pleased to announce the completion of 2 protection walls in Khost province, each in length of 175 and 245 meters. The affected people were still living at risk in Kootkai and Doormalaka villages, now with support of Special Trust Fund for Afghanistan (STFA), communities are safe from flood risks. The wall will not only protect communities but also enhance the flow of water in the area, contributing to growth in agriculture, local economy, and a green environment. Our work continues to make tangible #impact and transform Afghan communities into #safe and hopeful places to live!

Member of Parliament Pradyut Bordoloi recently wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah "regarding the urgent need to recognise heat waves as a national disaster & make it eligible for relief funds under NDRF (national disaster relief fund) and SDRF (state disaster relief fund)." To drive home the climate crisis, the Parliamentarian quoted numbers released by Down to Earth's State of India's Environment in Figures 2022 e-book, co-authored by Kiran P and me. The numbers have since been updated and can be accessed at the India Atlas on Extreme Weather Database (https://lnkd.in/d4GPxHSv). The highlights from the database, which is free-to-use and updated every month, are as follows: 1) India recorded extreme weather events on 314 of the 365 days in 2022. 2) In the first six months of 2023 (Jan-June), the country experienced extreme weather events on 143 of the 181 days , which claimed 651 lives and affected 1 million hectares (ha) crop area. https://lnkd.in/dmjCbb7p

Muslim Aid Pakistan's vision of fortifying Balochistan against adversity becomes reality thanks to the steadfast support of our key donor, National Disaster Risk Management Fund (NDRMF) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The efforts of our stakeholders extend beyond immediate disaster response, evident in the Flood Protection Wall project. This initiative stands as a testament to their commitment towards strengthening disaster-prone regions like Balochistan, fostering long-term rehabilitation, and constructing sustainable infrastructure. This was the sight our Papua New Guinea team faced last week. Days of torrential rain flooded roads, making rainforest access impossible. In Papua New Guinea, storms are becoming more severe, with torrential downpours and flash floods wreaking havoc on rainforest communities. Small scale farms and crops are often destroyed making it tough for rainforest communities to sustain their livelihoods. Poor infrastructure is a concern too, with flooded roads cutting people off from essential services. We provide unrestricted funding to the PNG communities we partner with every 6 months, which can help repair the damage caused by floods. The cash provides immediate relief by addressing needs like food and shelter. Read more about the situation here: https://lnkd.in/epFa2REg

Our partners in Papua New Guinea are on the front line of the climate crisis. Storms are destroying farms and crops, and therefore taking away vital sources of income for rainforest communities. No income means very little security and consequently, communities and their rainforest are threatened. The conversation around the effects of the climate crisis are so important. Let's come together to discuss solutions to these extreme weather patterns and get to the root of the problem. Giving cash straight to rainforest communities is a great place to start.

🔺Be cautious of flash floods and inundation in Bolikhamsai and Khammouan, Lao PDR in the next 24 hours!!! It is forecasted that heavy rainfall will likely occur in several areas of Bolikhamsai and Khammouan provinces of Lao PDR in the next 24 hours, and the rainfall will concentrate in areas which share the border with Vietnam. This may lead to flash floods and inundation in the next 24 hours. Those in the areas should be in close contact with relevant governmental authorities in terms of advice on preparedness and actions. #MRC #MekongRiverCommission #mrcmekong #flashflood
