Deep-rooted gender inequalities refer to systemic and long-standing disparities between genders that are ingrained in cultural, social, economic, and political structures. These inequalities manifest in various forms, such as unequal access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities, as well as biases in legal rights and social norms. They are often perpetuated by traditional beliefs and practices that assign different roles, responsibilities, and values to men and women, leading to sustained discrimination and disadvantage for one gender, typically women.

The UNDP 2023 Annual Report highlights the midterm review and second-year implementation of the UNDP Gender Equality Strategy 2022-2025, which presents key accomplishments made in accelerating gender equality in 2023. In particular, the report features strategies that companies can explore to create a more equitable and inclusive culture — ensuring that women fill decision-making positions in an organization for example, particularly in crisis countries. Achieving gender equality is closely linked to education. Despite progress in educational access, significant challenges persist, particularly in rural areas where schools are distant, learning facilities are inadequate, and the quality of teaching is subpar. Addressing these issues requires a sustained, multifaceted approach. Enhancing infrastructure, consistently training and retraining teachers, and engaging stakeholders—teachers, students, and local leaders—can bridge educational gaps and promote the importance of gender equality. In patriarchal societies, the value of educating girls is often underestimated, a narrative that must change. Additionally, creating and expanding scholarships for children and youth from vulnerable backgrounds is essential.

What is clear too, is the likely shift on gender gaps that may affect #males than #females partly due to affirmative action to empower women and girls due to existing #socialcultural barriers, #norms and #system barriers. I am aware that some areas in the gender equality indicators as per the #SDG priorities have regressed for some countries and my reflection is that this requires conceited efforts, political will at different levels #political will and new models in advancing gender equality.
