It may baffle you to learn that Early Childhood Development Interventions (arguably the most important investment one can make in a crisis context given that 80-90% of brain development occurs in those first 5 years) are one of the few areas that are NOT included as a standard intervention package in humanitarian and crisis response situations. Even the mildest trauma releases huge amounts of cortisol, preventing synapses from forming and often permanently damaging the brain of a child, thereby having huge detrimental impacts into adulthood such as increased risk of addiction and substance misuse, inability to effectively regulate emotions, neuropsychological conditions that inhibit ability to learn and retain information, increased likelihood of school dropout, unemployment, crime, disassociation from loved ones, social anxiety, depression. Children are resilient beings, but their brains and developmental needs require constant, if basic, attention, in order to be resilient to all that life will throw at you.

In the humanitarian sector, every day brings a new crisis or disaster. One year on from the onset of the conflict in #Sudan, over 9.4 million people have been displaced, half of whom are children. In 2024, over 25 million are in need of humanitarian assistance; more than one-third of the country’s population is facing acute hunger and potential famine. In the midst of the world's largest internal displacement crisis, these figures serve as a sobering reminder to keep #eyesonsudan and to continue advocating for an immediate cessation of hostilities and additional funding to meet the needs of conflict-affected communities across the country.

Ten months into the conflict, Sudan continues to grapple with a dire humanitarian crisis with severe shortages of essential resources such as food, water, and medicines. The ongoing conflict has resulted in the displacement of over 7 million people within Sudan and neighboring countries. The IFRC launched two appeals to provide support for this crisis. Currently, these appeals are largely underfunded. Our collective imperative is clear: to address this unfolding crisis by mobilizing the necessary funding and support. Eight months ago, as conflict engulfed the capital Khartoum, Sudan was the focus of the world’s attention. But while the news cycle has moved on, it is now ranked as one of the worst humanitarian nightmares in recent history. Sudan now has the highest number of displaced people globally. More than half the population - 24.7 million people - need humanitarian assistance. It is estimated that by February, 4.9 million people will be experiencing emergency levels of hunger, the highest number on record. If conditions do not improve, families will start to experience "catastrophic" hunger, meaning that without assistance, they will starve to death. This should be headline news. Concern’s team in Sudan is tirelessly working to deliver life-saving aid to those who need it, but only 36% of the international funding required to avert catastrophe has been met. #Sudan #SudanCrisis #news #headlines

The war in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has created one of the world’s largest displacement crises, with more than 10 million people forced to flee their homes. More than 680,000 people have arrived in South Sudan since April last year, at a time when the country’s health system and existing humanitarian assistance can barely meet its population’s needs. In the coming months, the pressure on health services and aid organisations is likely to increase, with an estimated seven million people predicted to be without access to sufficient food by July. We urgently call on international donors to allocate funding to address the needs of the returnees, refugees and host populations in South Sudan. This must include the provision of food, water, shelter, sanitation and medical care, as well as the means for people to continue their journeys. Sudan is on the edge of collapse as it marks one year since the outbreak of a devastating civil war. The ongoing conflict has plunged the country into a deepening humanitarian crisis, with millions of people facing severe food shortages and starvation. The situation is aggravated by crumbling infrastructure, economic instability, and essential services. Civilians, especially women and children, bear the brunt of the conflict, enduring unimaginable suffering and displacement. Since the start of the civil war, thousands of homes, schools, hospitals, and other vital civilian structures have been destroyed. The situation in Sudan is dire, with over 8.4 million people, including 2 million children under the age of 5, forced to flee their homes in the wake of the conflict, according to Doctors Without Borders (MSF). Nearly 18 million people face acute food insecurity, 14 million of them children, and over 70 percent of hospitals are no longer functional amid a rise in infectious diseases. Despite these alarming figures, the international response has been woefully inadequate, with only 5% of the 2024 humanitarian response plan for Sudan funded thus far, Islamic Relief said in a statement. As Sudan struggles with the devastating consequences of war, urgent action is needed to avert a complete collapse and address the pressing humanitarian needs of its population. #Sudan #war #humanitarian #africa #globalpoliticsaffaira #aids #news
