Re-listening to this great Acquired episode about Nike… Those of you familiar with the history of First Five Marketing will understand the special bond we have with the brand, so the backstory wasn’t ever the hook for listening. It’s absolutely the analysis of the dynamic presenter team. And one particular point raised sticks out, the near monopoly in basketball footwear. Reportedly 2019 stats show 86% share of performance and 96% share lifestyle basketball footwear. What does this mean for the other guys? Is there room for new brands? As captain of England's national football team, Harry Kane has every footwear brand in the world courting him. Surprisingly, Kane has chosen to sign a lifetime deal with Skechers and not with another company you might expect--like Nike, Adidas, or even Puma. Kane previously had a deal with Nike but that expired in August 2022. Sometimes it's about doing something different. Skechers is known more for their casual sneakers rather than athletic shoes. Now Harry Kane is the face of Skechers' new SKX_01, the brand's first ever football/soccer boot, which places the brand in more direct competition with Nike and Adidas. While Nike still dominates most athlete endorsements, particularly in the NBA, other brands like Skechers are staying competitive in other sports by landing major stars like Harry Kane. Coco Gauff and Shohei Ohtani are signed to New Balance. Neymar and Lamelo Ball are signed to Puma. Jimmy Butler is signed to Li Ning.
