UNCAGED Innovations has just secured $5.6 million to develop plastic and animal-free leather. The New York-based startup uses plant proteins and grains to create a sustainable leather alternative that emits 95% fewer greenhouse gases, 93% less water, and 72% less energy than traditional animal leather. It's currently working with some major fashion houses and automotive companies, and has plans to commercialize further in the coming year, founder and CEO Stephanie Downs told Business Insider.
