Despite of the growing interest and potential within #German space start-ups, a challenge appears with the prospect of budget cuts for the "National Program for Space and Innovation" in the upcoming federal budget.   A recent article by Dieter Sürig emphasises the importance of public investment in attracting private capital and fostering a self-sustaining #SpaceEconomy, a mission that resonates with UNIO Enterprise's dedication to achieving #GlobalConnectivity through cutting-edge satellite technology.   I can see a positive momentum in the industry, with upcoming #rocket launches by fellow #startups and collaborations between traditional players and newcomers, indicating a promising future for the German space industry.   To maintain and increase the industry's growth and competitiveness on a European level, I hope for continued governmental support for space start-ups. Additionally, there is also a need for involvement from major players in the #automotive and #telecommunications industries to foster #innovation and growth on a bigger scale.   We at #UNIO are optimistic about the opportunities in the space sector and believe that UNIO's focus on global #connectivity positions us as a key player in shaping the future of #SpaceTechnology. 📰 Media analysis: As the start of the Ariane is highlighting the importance of a strong and independent European space industry, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung analyses the impact of German New Space start-ups on on the European ecosystem. 🚀 🇪🇺 In Germany a small but rapidly growing sector of young space companies has emerged in recent years. Many of the German hopefuls within the space industry are New Space startups, who are leading the charge with their cutting-edge launch technologies. Great to see some of the founders we get to partner with in conversation with FAZ's tech editor Maximilian Sachse: Hélène Huby and The Exploration Company, which is paving the way for future space logistics through its reusable cargo capsule. Also constellr Co-Founder and CEO Max Gulde, who is leveraging satellite data to revolutionize industries such as agriculture. "The increased private sector interest in space companies in Europe has helped to awaken the local space industry," emphasizes our GP Thomas Oehl. I have spoken to many #space founders in the last 2 years. The predominant theme has been #minituarisation - sending large constellations of small satellites into space -, and #robotisation - sending intelligent robots into orbit to fix what's already there (see Jeromy Grimmett for details!). K2space is different. 🚀 Karan Kunjur and Neel Kunjur want to send a giant 40 metre satellite into space. Their satellite bus is a platform that can piggyback a whole collection of instruments from various customers - such as thermal and spectral cameras, radar and other sensors. The young company with 28 employees has already received funding from the #Pentagon. Their #MegaClass satellite delivers an electrical output of 20 kilowatts and thus comes close to the largest conventional satellites, such as the Viasat-3 communications satellite with 26 kilowatts. 🌒 Where does the renaissance of large satellites come from? Large rockets like #Falcon9 and the upcoming #Starship are to blame, if you ask former SpaceX Vice President Bulent Altan and his partner Joram Voelklein. They believe in K2Space's vision: "Larger satellites make sense because they simply allow us to bring more customer loads on board," Altan explains. "For years, people said that large satellites were dead. K2Space is now going the other way round and showing that they are worthwhile again." 💲 K2Space just closed a #SeriesA financing round totalling 50 million dollars. What does it take for a safe takeoff on the route to climate action and climate-compatible aviation? Fast action? Yes. Novel technologies and future aircraft? Of course. - But also the best possible political and economic boundary conditions, which need to be agreed on at a global level. Taking the right decisions, picking the right "trade-offs" is key. Joint discussions and efforts are leading the way and will for sure happen during these days - at the ILA Berlin - Pioneering Aerospace. This was indeed one of the sharpest presentations of the symposium, a true dual-use and innovation strategy by the Pentagon. Combined with the presentation from the National Space Council, on the international dimension of space across all sectors of government and economy, this provides a clear line of thought and action on the other side of the Atlantic. Both aspects are key for any space industry to survive in the global space race, and for Europe to secure the future of its brilliant industrial capability and to avoid the next age of dependency. Strategy matters. Scale matters. Europe needs to catch-up on both. Hier besteht erheblicher Handlungsbedarf.

We will always fly, as it is part of mankind’s dream. Climate action is not about the climate but about mankind and we need to act quickly, minister Robert Habeck (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz) pointed out during the opening of the 4th Berlin Aviation Summit #BAS24. Building a climate-neutral plane is not rocket science. We need to set the right political and economic boundary conditions and just do it. The urgency of actions and the need of decarbonization was highlighted in the impulse talk by @Johann Rockström (PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research). UNIO is here to build a #SatelliteConstellation to compete with the #Starlink satellite system by the end of the decade. 🛰️ We are focused on establishing a #SatelliteNetwork that offers fast and seamless data connections for industries worldwide, with a particular focus on the #mobility industry. Our plans include launching over 1,000 satellites into low Earth orbit by 2030, with commercial operations scheduled to begin as early as 2027. UNIO's system is being optimised for the #automotive and #logistics industries, recognising the growing need for fast and reliable #data connections, which are crucial for the development of #AutomatedDriving and various in-car entertainment features. While our plans are ambitious and the competition is strong, the automotive industry's growing interest in satellite technology for data transfer and connectivity is evident, making it a promising attempt.
