Ministry of Urban Development, in collaboration with UN-Habitat Nepal, Department of Urban Development and Building Construction, Nepal National Urban Forum and various urban stakeholders, organized a one-day event to commemorate the World Habitat Day 2024 themed “Engaging Youth to Create a Better Urban Future” and the Nepal National Urban Forum on “Financing Localization and Localizing Finance” on 7th October, 2024 in Kathmandu, Nepal.
The Voluntary Local Review Report of Chandragiri was also officially launched at the event. The report is a significant step in localising the Sustainable Development Goals that provides valuable insights into the municipality’s progress towards the SDGs, that guides the actions to achieve the targets and the importance of VLRs to achieve the national SDG commitment.
The Chief Guest, Hon’ Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of MOUD, Mr. Prakash Man Singh highlighted youth as the future of Nepal’s cities and must be actively engaged in planning and decision-making to shape a better tomorrow.
The keynote speaker Hon’ Vice Chair of Madhesh Province Policy and Planning Commissions Dr. Sohan Prasad Sah, provided the contextual scenario of Madhesh, highlighting youth-driven efforts that have brought visible impacts in preserving the environment and transforming lives of the marginalized communities and the need to harness their potential.
Speaking in the session, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Nepal, Ms. Hanaa Singer Hamdy emphasized the need of youth engagement in urban planning decisions to shape a just and livable cities for future generations. She underscored youth as Nepal’s greatest asset, with the potential to drive innovation, and as change makers to address complex urban challenges.
Other sessions in the event included a presentation on New Towns and Cities in Nepal and several other powerful youth-led initiatives on urban greenery, waste management, urban mobility, community mobilization and digital governance. The afternoon session transitioned into the Nepal National Urban Forum (NNUF) which focused on localizing finance for sustainable urbanization to align local actions with global urban agendas for the World Urban Forum (WUF) and poster presentations showcased ongoing efforts by several organizations.
