The #2030Agenda is built upon the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs), collectively chosen by all UN Member States as humanity's shared objectives. These goals embody a comprehensive vision of development, encompassing environmental, social, and economic sustainability. However, while the SDGs have a global scope, their success depends on our ability to implement them at the #local and #regional levels. This is why we talk about the localization of the SDGs, which is the process of transforming them into reality at the local level, in line with national strategies and priorities. Localization of the Sustainable Development Goals thus entails collaboration and coordination among all components of society: from private businesses to the public sector, from civil society to media and cultural operators. Voluntary Local Reviews (#VLRs) represent one of the tools through which the localization of the SDGs can be implemented: they are voluntary reports aimed at analyzing the progress made by local and regional governments in relation to SDG implementation. They describe the territory, community initiatives, and institutional efforts, providing valuable data, sometimes available only at the local level, through a participatory approach involving all members of society. My journey in the field of SDG localization began here. One month ago, precisely on April 18, the first VLR of #Tunisia, the second in North Africa, on the municipality of #Ennour (Governorate of #Kasserine) was presented. I had the honour and pleasure of participating in the event alongside UN-Habitat Tunisia , witnessing firsthand the incredible work of the experts who facilitated its development, and listening to the testimonies of those involved, from UN-Habitat colleagues to regional government representatives, from local institutions to civil society associations. I strongly believe in the impact that initiatives like these can have on the territory: through a bottom-up approach, it is possible to have a clear idea of the needs of the area and address local challenges by proposing concrete solutions, and, above all, tailored to the needs of the population. If you are interested in delving into the topic and learning more about the Ennour municipality, here is the link to the VLR: https://lnkd.in/d25TpkpH

The #Swiss Cooperation Programme in the #Mekong Region for 2022-2025 aims to address critical challenges faced by #Cambodia and #Laos while supporting their #development priorities. This initiative is particularly significant as these countries strive to achieve the #Sustainable Development Goals amidst the ongoing impacts of the #COVID-19 pandemic. Key Objectives and Focus Areas The program is structured around three main domains: 1. Inclusive Economic Development: This focuses on enhancing economic opportunities for disadvantaged groups, particularly youth and women, to foster resilience and prosperity. 2. Climate Change and Natural Resource Management: With the Mekong region being highly vulnerable to climate change, the program emphasizes adaptation strategies to mitigate environmental impacts. 3. Good Governance and Citizen Participation: Strengthening local governance and increasing citizen engagement in decision-making processes are critical for fostering democratic values and improving public services. Context and Challenges The Mekong region, characterized by its rich natural resources and diverse population, has made significant strides in poverty reduction over the last two decades. However, it still faces substantial challenges, including: - Economic Impact of COVID-19: The pandemic has led to economic contractions, reversing gains made in poverty alleviation and exacerbating inequalities. - Climate Vulnerability: The region is prone to extreme weather events, which threaten livelihoods and food security. - Political Constraints: In both Cambodia and Laos, political environments limit civil liberties and citizen participation, posing additional hurdles to development efforts. Strategic Approach Switzerland's involvement in the Mekong region is guided by its long-term commitment to development cooperation. The program aligns with broader Swiss foreign policy objectives aimed at promoting sustainable and inclusive growth. By leveraging its expertise in vocational training and interdisciplinary decision-making, Switzerland seeks to create synergies between international cooperation and private sector investment, particularly in green technologies and sustainable practices. Takeaways The Swiss Cooperation Programme in the Mekong Region represents a comprehensive approach to addressing the complex interplay of economic, environmental, and governance challenges in Cambodia and Laos. By focusing on inclusive development and climate resilience, Switzerland aims to support these nations in their journey towards sustainable growth and improved quality of life for their citizens. #LeaveNoOneBehind #Switzerland #Mekongsubregion #Sustainable #strategy #Cooperation

🌟 As the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) day 2024, soon approaches, here at GWOPA we have begun to commemorate the stories highlighting South-South partnership! 🌍💧 As we progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs), South-South and triangular cooperation have proven to be invaluable catalysts for Sanitation Water Operators’ Partnerships (#SWOPs) and Water Operators’ Partnerships (#WOPs) in achieving their aims. Yolanda Gomez, a WOP facilitator in the Philippines, has witnessed firsthand how these similarities foster trust and camaraderie, which she explains is easily fostered between South-South partners. Through her work, she has seen how Southeast Asian partners, sharing linguistic and cultural commonalities, navigate their journeys toward sanitation improvements. When mentors and mentees have relatable experiences, it becomes easier to introduce new methods and solutions, making the path toward #SDG achievement smoother. Yolanda notes that the cost of a South-South WOP/SWOP is lower compared to other models, making these partnerships not only effective but also more accessible. Through her work, Yolanda has also seen how these partnerships leverage shared experiences to address broader challenges, such as #climate change and #inclusivity. In the South, utilities have exchanged ideas to enhance operational capacities in managing sanitation and wastewater treatment. These partnerships not only improve efficiency but also ensure that even vulnerable and underserved communities benefit, contributing to more inclusive development and resilient systems. With intra-South trade higher than ever, accounting for more than a quarter of all world trade, Yolanda’s work in the Philippines pays true testament to the invaluable acceleration that South-South collaboration in achieving our global aims. Stay tuned as we highlight the story of Ruhaida of Indonesia in her experiences focusing on South-South collaboration tomorrow!
