Habitat Bangladesh, as part of the Urban INGO Forum Bangladesh, in partnership with the Department of Disaster Science and Climate Resilience, University of Dhaka is going to organize the 8th Urban Dialogue 2024 on May 28, 2024 at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban situated in University of Dhaka. This year’s theme “Resilient Urban Cities towards LDC Graduation” focuses on some of the pressing issues that urban Bangladesh currently faces as Bangladesh becomes a developing country from a least developing one. The dialogue is aimed at bringing key figures from government agencies (including the Mayor of Dhaka and Sylhet and the Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives), non-government organizations, academia, private companies, media and community members from urban informal settlements to collaborate and find ways to tackle challenges Bangladesh faces in the urban landscape. #collaboration #partnership #dialogue

Papua New Guinea's Urban Future Looks Dull and Gloomy According to UN, more then 50% of the world's population are living in urban areas. It projects that 2/3rds of the world population will be living in urban areas by 2030. Most of the urban growth are happening in the developing countries as developed countries have reached their climax. Rapid urban population growth is caused both by birth and migration. PNG as a developing country is no exception as it is facing its share of urban challenges. The events witnessed on the 10th of January 2024 in Port Moresby is the first in the short history of this country but beginning of more to come as we progress into the future. Though we have the lowest urban population (13.3%) in the world, our urban population growth rate (2.41) is among the highest. Our development priorities are more towards rural areas and giving less attention to our urban challenges. Urban municipalities are left alone to address them and are struggling. There is no national program to manage urbanization in the country. The national government should reestablish the Office of Urbanization abolished based on ill advice and introduce programs under the existing National Urbanization Policy to efficiently and effectively manage urbanization in the country. It will minimize negative impacts and maximize benefits of urbanization.

🚀 New SLE study release: Climate-resilient Cities in Bangladesh 📚   We are excited to share our latest Joint International Research Project (JIRP) study, "Urban Living Labs in Bangladesh – Inclusive and climate-resilient cities through participatory environmental management". This collaborative study addresses the critical issues of developing strategies for climate resilience, focusing on four key cities in Bangladesh: Khulna, Satkhira, Rajshahi, and Sirajganj. Here are two highlights:   🛠️ Engaging Stakeholders in Urban Living Lab (ULL): Collaboration is key. By involving local communities, policymakers, and civil society, we create long-term solutions for urban challenges that benefit everyone—especially marginalised groups. 🏛️ Policy and Governance: Effective urban governance requires strong stakeholder engagement and sustainable models. Our report outlines practical recommendations for scaling up initiatives that promote resilient, liveable cities. This monastic school is using funding from the "Nepal-India Development Cooperation" grant from the Government of India to construct a new dormitory building and other amenities. The announcement states that the project is being carried out as a High Impact Community Development project (HICDP) in compliance with a deal between the governments of Nepal and India. The Lomanthang Rural Municipality in Mustang is in charge of this project. The project is a shining example of the robust development cooperation between India and Nepal. The political representatives, as well as the chairman of Lowo Nyiphug Namdrol Norbuling Monastic School and Lomanthang Rural Municipality, expressed their appreciation for the Government of India's continued development assistance to Nepal's inhabitants in priority regions in their speeches. In the Lomanthang Rural Municipality of Mustang, the new building would benefit the students of Lowo Nyiphug Namdrol Norbuling Monastic School by providing better living and educational opportunities. Additionally, it would help to preserve the residents' culture and customs while enhancing the learning environment and advancing religious care and education. Since 2003, the Indian government has implemented about 551 HICDPs in a variety of industries in Nepal; 490 of those projects have been finished. Of them, 59 projects in various sectors are situated in the Gandaki Province, including 17 in Mustang. The embassy also stated that the implementation of HICDPs is proof of India's continued assistance to the Nepali government in its efforts to enhance the quality of life for its people by building infrastructure in areas of great importance. The anticipated cost of this project is NRs 41.40 million. Villages remain critical and relevant for orderly, rational and realistic development of any urban areas in general and nation as a whole in particular. Housing large population; producing raw material for the industry to process; providing food, dairy products and vegetables essential for human living; housing large manpower ; offering largest market for consumption and production; having close proximity with nature; housing compact development and numerically being large in numbers, villages remain critical and valuable for eradicating poverty, generating employment, minimizing problems of cities/towns and launching nation on the path of fast trajectory of growth and development. Despite  holding distinct advantages on the canvass of national development, still villages find little room in the agenda defined for  promoting planned development  of human settlements and largely remain marginalized in the options put in place for  planned development. There is tendency to forget that villages are settlements, housing human beings and today’s village are going to be towns of tomorrow, so accordingly they need to be  rationally planned, developed and managed by equipping with all basic amenities and services essential for human living. Villages need respect, support and attention for empowerment and development

Excited to share my article entitled “Nature's Ledger: Assessing Ecosystem Services in Chattogram amidst LULCC Dynamics”, published in the winter edition newsletter of the American Planning Association. According to Article 18A, Protection and Improvement of Environment and Bio-diversity of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, the state shall endeavor to protect and improve the environment and to preserve and safeguard the natural resources, bio-diversity, wetlands, forests, and wildlife for the present and future citizens. This article was inserted by the Constitution (Fifteenth Amendment) Act, 2011. It reflects the commitment of Bangladesh to conserve its rich and diverse ecosystems for the benefit of its people and the world. The government of Bangladesh introduced nature-based solutions in the eighth five-year plan (8FYP), where it was mentioned that nature-based solutions (NbS) and ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) will be the main priorities of the national adaptation plan (NAP). However, there is a lack in the database of ecosystem service value nationally, let alone locally. This article delves into the intricate relationship between land use land cover changes and the ecosystem services that form the bedrock of community well-being, emphasizing a planning perspective that centers on community-based ideas, processes, and policies.
