Meet Jensen Verhelle, our EVP Catalysis and new Management Board Member since May 2024. He joined Umicore as a young graduate and has since held positions in finance, product management and R&D. Watch, and get to know him with our #ElevatorPitch.
Upgrading the Green Deal is common sense, not ‘business-friendly’, as Europe is currently learning the hard way from other countries such as the U.S., China, and others. If it doesn’t work for business, it doesn’t work. Period. Therefore, the #AntwerpDeclaration for an #industrialDeal is very timely.
Since the EU Green Deal was launched 5 years ago, it’s time to get real. To realize the ambitions of the EU Green Deal, 🇪🇺 Europe needs investments to make the energy transition and a technological step up happen, restore business confidence and create jobs. The #industrialDeal that has been signed now by over 1,000 partners - from companies, industry associations and social partners - shows the way to make the Green Deal into a real deal - if not, Europe will be left behind. 🇺🇸 The U.S. Inflation Reduction Act and some other measures of the Biden Administration, make a compelling business case to invest in new technologies and green transition, by stimulating value chains and eco-systems, combined with speedy permitting and subsidies. But it’s not only because of subsidies - the U.S. approach makes an attractive appeal to businesses and investors. 🇨🇳 China is in a different way stimulating its own industry, helping them to innovate, scale-up, and export. 🇪🇺 It is time for the EU to put economic and energy literacy at the front to achieve its political ambitions of the Green Deal.
On the eve of EU elections and a new European Commission to take office later this year, it is now the time for Europe to make a clear choice - the choice to stimulate investing in the energy transition and new technologies. This is a matter of common sense.
Solvay is proud to be one of the founding signatories of the #AntwerpDeclaration.
After 6 weeks, it has become an unprecedented cross-societal European movement with 1000 signatories representing companies, associations, unions, and other organizations calling for an Industrial Deal. This supports a strong, resilient, and competitive European manufacturing industry, which provides high quality jobs, and supports the #GreenDeal.
We urge EU leaders to join us by including the #industrialDeal in the new EU Strategic Agenda and priorities for the next five years. Solvay stands ready to be an essential partner on delivering the European Industrial Deal and EU #climateneutrality.

Last week, our own Hendrik Waegeman had the honour of providing evidence to the UK House of Lords, together with Fiona Mischel and Mary Maxon, a unique opportunity to share his insights on 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗞 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗕𝗶𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 and the 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗼-𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆.
According to Hendrik:
➡ Europe and the UK can be 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲-𝘂𝗽 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 developed over the past decade, which has helped hundreds of companies advance their manufacturing processes.
➡ Currently, 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 should 𝗻𝗼𝘁 be the primary 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗸 for start-ups and SMEs, as 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 and lead times are short.
➡ The 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 in the current economic climate are 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 and navigating the lengthy and bureaucratic 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹 for SynBio products. These issues are interconnected, as prolonged approval processes lead to increased financing needs and reduced investor interest.
➡ Sufficient 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 in the form of 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 for SynBio companies to 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 "𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵" and transition from the lab to real-world manufacturing. Despite the excellent infrastructure available in Europe and the UK, 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿. Within a climate of high interest rates, it is increasingly difficult for companies to raise sufficient funds, resulting in many promising innovations never reaching the market.
➡ 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 to support companies in their scale-up efforts, including the EIC programs, Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU), the Innovation Fund, the Innovation Actions within Horizon Europe, and many more. On top of that, many EU member states have national programs to support higher TRL scale R&D. The UK could particularly benefit from developing specific and similar instruments to help its SynBio community scale up its technologies.
This week, we witnessed two experts share their knowledge at the UK House of Lords at the 𝑺𝒄𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑻𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒏𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒚 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒆, offering a glimpse into the fascinating world of engineering biology.
🌱 Hendrik Waegeman of Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant took the stage to discuss the latest advancements in engineering biology. His insights were invaluable, emphasizing the critical role of innovation in shaping our future.
