Meet our Audio Lead, Scott! What is the first game you ever played? It probably would’ve been Crash Bandicoot as a kid, those games were a ton of fun. But one of the first I can really recall well is the original Diablo - I can still remember the feeling of finally beating the game! Not to mention the amazing soundtrack which just fits the atmosphere and mood of the game so well. Why do you like working in the game industry? Ultimate is one of those rare places that genuinely manages to tick all the boxes: Fantastic work-life balance, incredibly talented and friendly staff, amazing projects, lots of trust and respect, and a genuine passion across the studio for making really amazing and fun games. For me, working in the games industry has always been an important way to give back - I had so many amazing experiences playing video games growing up, and I love being able to be part of sharing that with others. I really feel like Ultimate is the right place to be able to do that. What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone who is looking to get into the game industry? Don’t be afraid of failure. Look at each failure as an opportunity to grow, and try to take a positive away each time so that you don’t repeat the same mistakes in the future. Persistence is the key - if you fail enough and keep learning, eventually you’ll be unstoppable! Success is built upon failure. What is the Ultimate way to game? This might be a little old-school of me - but nothing beats a good LAN party! Getting all your friends together in the same room, ordering pizza and staying up late gaming together just really hits the spot.

Okay, I’ll confess…..as a teenager I loved playing video games. I’m going to date myself a bit, but I was a teenager in the 80’s (still THE BEST DECADE EVER!!). In those days we had some game consoles that people played in your home, but I’m referring to the old arcade games….the big games that were in bowling alleys, convenience stores, and arcade centers. And as shocking as it may seem, you had to pay to play…a whole quarter! The game consoles of today were still a few years away from being commonplace. I suppose it’s worth admitting that occasionally I would become obsessed or addicted to some of the games. I found it infuriating when I would “lose.” I just KNEW there was a way to beat the gorilla and save the girl (“Donkey Kong”), blow up all the spaceships (“Space Invaders”), accomplish the mission ("Spy Hunter"), get the high score, and immortalize myself in the RAM of the arcade game! (Of course, that was by my initials only, but hey….I was 13!) I’ve reflected on why I was so obsessed with playing those archaic games. Why was it such a big deal for me to keep playing and somehow “win” at something so meaningless? I believe it was an inner drive and determination to find a way to win! With a few more years behind me, I still have a competitive drive inside me that doesn’t like to “lose.” Now, however, that inner drive or resilience plays out in different ways, including business. We all know, of course, that life will present setbacks, and businesses aren’t excluded! We’re going to experience setbacks and perceived failures, but from my vast video-gaming experiences I can promise one thing: there IS a way, there IS a solution, and persistence, patience, resilience, and determination WILL bring you to the winner’s circle–however you choose to define that. So don’t quit. Adjust, take a step back, reevaluate, and recommit. But don’t quit! (At least until the quarters run out!) Photo: Timeline

Video games can teach us a lot about how money (and life) works 🎮 1) If you want to motivate someone, frequent rewards are far more powerful than a one-time bonus. 2) Everyone's allowed to finish the game at their own pace, in their own time. There are no prizes for finishing first, no punishments for finishing last. Honour your own timeline. 3) We're often obsessed with collecting as much in-game currency as possible to ensure our character lives the best life they can. But as we finish the game, we realise that the game was never about what you owned, but the storylines you completed along the way. 4) There is no limit to how many times you can fail or restart a specific mission. You always have more time than you think. 5) You get to choose your character and their personality: are they positive-sum, negative-sum or zero-sum? 6) When you finish the game, all scoreboards go back to zero. It doesn't matter how many points you notched up over the years. There are always new players and new leaders on the scoreboard. None of them leave a lasting legacy. None of them will be remembered. On a long enough timeline, players find a new favourite video game. And it goes on. Enjoy the game while it lasts.

Many screw up live service games by focusing on the wrong things. (I've seen it firsthand) 1. Core Game. ↳ It's crucial, but it's not everything. 2. Retention Game. ↳ Most games fail here. Do not miss it. 3. Advocate Game. ↳ Your goldmine, but only if basics are right. Stop obsessing about a perfect Core Game. 🔴 It’s a trap. If your players don’t return, polish fails. 🟢 What you need to do 1. Core Game. Is what your players do over and over again. What you want to hear: ↳ "Got it, I know how your game works." 2. Retention Game. Is what brings players back repeatedly. What you want to hear: ↳ "I'm hooked; I want to keep progressing!" 3. Advocate Game. Is where your top fans live. What you want to hear: ↳ “I'm hosting a live stream for your game!” Anything else, Sergei? ✋ Don’t wait for perfection. Engage top players with social features. Build anticipation with timed mechanics. Hope this help! Please repost! ♻️ Appreciate it. I really want to help many thrive in gaming for a fulfilling, positive and real life. And with that → positive, real results. Thank you for reposting. ❤️

These Card Games Could Make You Smarter On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out which card games could make you smarter by training your brain while you’re having fun! Brain Training I don’t know about you, but I like challenges that test my brain and make me think. I am heavily invested in my daily Wordle game, and always feel delighted if I manage to beat my brainiac brother, and I enjoy figuring out problems and challenges for myself rather than getting somebody to do it for me. For this reason, brain training challenges always appeal, and I love learning new skills. But, forget flashcards and dusty textbooks, the road to intellectual enlightenment might just be paved with…card games? That’s right, we might be able to ditch the mental drudgery and sharpen our wits with the surprising power of card games! #cardgame #cardgames #braintraining #educationalgames #blogpost READ MORE NOW https://lnkd.in/e3mipTnk

How can you make your platformer game less frustrating #1 A number of game developers find themselves in that situation where they have made that masterpiece "The Perfect Platformer". That feeling of perfection lingers until a third party tries to play the game and then the unexpected happens. The controls feel realistic but stiff and frustrating. And most notably, the player finds traversing from platform to platform a bigger challenge than a dark souls boss fight at maximum difficulty. To address these issues let's start with: 1. The Coyote time It has been observed that not every player has the ability to make pixel perfect reflexes especially when trying to jump from one platform to another. A lot of players react too late when trying to jump off the platform where the game character is completely off the platform before the jump is registered, making the character fall down to its death and making for a frustrating game experience for the player. A newbie can stop there and blame the player for his slow reflexes but we can go a step further by introducing the "Coyote Time". The Coyote time is the time after which the game character being completely off the platform can still register a successful jump. The Coyote Time is a time of grace usually a quarter of a second given to the player usually to counter the effect of the slow reaction while trying to make a jump. This little change makes for a more fun, playable and addictive gaming experience. The video below shows the Coyote Time in action. 👇👇 Thank you for following In the next post, I shall be talking about "Jump Buffers"

February will be the month where I get back to my usual rhythm. I will continue to develop my game and I have steps in mind that will make it faster and more productive. I will take a year off from video games. I will stop playing games for the sake of playing games. This will free up my weekends to do more creative work, including my game. I will start playing video games again when GTA VI or Death Stranding 2 are released. I really want video games to be a meaningful time again. There will be small exceptions when I am away from home at my family; or friends want to play online. But other than that: I will not touch games on my own time. For my game development efforts, I plan to set up the Steam page for my game next month. That will be my initial investment in to my game. Even though I do not expect people to buy my game, I want to make every step possible as if I were doing real business. An early Steam page means that people will be able to add the game to their wishlist, and when the game is released, they can decide whether or not to buy it. A lot of small developers make the mistake of creating the Steam page when they release the game. They have zero SEO traction on Steam and in the search engines making them invisible to the market that is saturated anyway. Also, having a Steam page gives me the opportunity to check out the Steam API and start building the achievement system in my game. It will be a simple 100% as the game itself is simple. I want some challenging ones but it might attract achievement hunters for the easy win. If that makes something happy my game achieved a goal for sure.
