Member Spotlight: Mark Wojcik ✨ Occupation: Law Professor at the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law (previously known as The John Marshall Law School). School(s): B.A. cum laude, Bradley University; J.D. cum laude, University of Illinois Chicago School of Law; LL.M. (in Trade Regulation), New York University School of Law. What prompted you to join the ULCC? Another law professor and Club member told me that joining the Club was the present you gave yourself when you became a tenured professor, so that's what I did. And my office is less than two minutes away! What did you learn about the Club after joining? The Staff really cares about the members and making sure that everyone has a great experience every time they come to the Club. What is your fondest ULCC memory? My law school organized a wonderful reception at the Club to celebrate my inauguration into the Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame. It was a spectacular evening for me and my husband. #clublife #members

This #IWD it’s important to recognise that women’s experiences in the criminal justice system are often overlooked and data gaps make it hard to spot and address concerning trends. But our new project aims to help fix this. This lack of visibility is especially true for young racialised women. Their experiences, at the intersection of race, age and gender, disappear in discussions about the justice system all too often. Following our 2021 report on racial disparities in the youth justice system (https://bit.ly/3wDXvfI), we are now working with Travers Smith to look at the specific challenges faced by Black and racialised girls and young women in the criminal justice system. Looking at each stage of this system, from entry to post-release, we aim to shed light on the unique barriers and disadvantages faced by this acutely marginalised group and to propose meaningful, practical reforms to address these issues.

Eight national bar associations (National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, National Bar Association, National Native American Bar Association, National Association of Women Lawyers, National LGBTQ Bar Association, Hispanic National Bar Association, National Association of Blind Lawyers, and South Asian Bar Association of North America) have issued a call to action to help defend diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives against attacks from segments of the country. Their letter states: "The overwhelming majority of DEI efforts are not only legal, but essential in today's workplace," and "this is why it is critical to stand firm on the importance of DEI and be strong advocates in your corporations, law firms and universities." #diversity #dei https://lnkd.in/e2F8D2W8

Making sense of sustainability: because it just doesn't have to be that hard. Lawyer, LFA and WELL Faculty. #climatelaw #climatelawyer #esg
This may be my favorite headline, ever "the fine line between bravery and stupidity", which highlights what it takes to be one of the few #climatelawyers out there. You can register to read the article for free, or here's a few highlights: ✅ There's a fine line between bravery and stupidity, take calculated risks and try to stay on the side of bravery. ✅ Mentorship is key: ask for help and if you're in a position to offer help, give it freely, particularly to folks who represent diverse lived experience. ✅ Skill up while you focus on existing work, and share what you know (i.e. teach). ✅ The urgency of the climate crisis propels us to take action, and sometimes you just have to go for it. ✅ I could not have done this without immense support, here's some of the entities and organizations that have been instrumental in my journey: AIA Seattle, International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), PACIFICA LAW GROUP LLP, Stok, Stefanie Young, National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), University of Washington, Boston Architectural College and many, many more individuals and partners (you know who you are). https://lnkd.in/g23WjvVc

Happy Monday!! I had the pleasure of working with James Legg on a case a while back, and it sparked a very interesting discussion between us… one which we have been trying to capture in article form ever since. Delighted to finally share our first co-written published article! Have a gander… let us have your thoughts. Could there be unconscious - or overt - gender bias in our family Court system and is there a way we can work to eliminate it in the interests of true justice? #Court #FamilyLaw #Genderbias #gender #genderneutral
