The Case for Transformative Justice in Schools In January of 2019 or 2020 (what is time???), I attended the Restorative Justice Initiative’s (https://lnkd.in/ezVEsyqY) city-wide gathering in New York. Among the day’s engaging events was a circle led by two high school students who attended a school where restorative justice practices had been adopted. The wisdom dropped by our high school-aged facilitators was profound and incited epiphanies in the minds and spirits of the adults in the circle. With insights well beyond their teenage years, they painted the picture of contradictions present at their schools where restorative justice is concerned. One such example of said contradictions shared was the simultaneous presence of peer mediation and circles with metal detectors and school resource officers. As the discussion unfolded, we affirmed their astute analyses of their school’s RJ contradictions and amidst this conversation they took the time to teach us how to do this work better and more justly. With passion and unflagging resolve, they said that the real work isn’t simply restorative justice but the work of transformative justice. I left that gathering better prepared to do this work and I credit these young souls with growing me that day. One text I use to guide my thought and practice when it comes to transformative justice in schools is Dr. Maisha Winn’s (2018) Justice on Both Sides: Transforming Education Through Restorative Justice (https://lnkd.in/ei5Ybkdc): “In a restorative justice process, all stakeholders have an opportunity to explore ‘What were your needs before the incident in question?’ And ‘What are your needs now?’ Imagine students, youth, and adults in a school community discussing their needs to address obligations and next steps to make things right, from the very beginning of the academic year, and determining together who is obligated to meet these needs” (p. 21). I look forward to exploring this work further with groups of pre- and in-service teachers in my capacity as a teacher educator and educational equity facilitator. Shout-out to a future where transformative justice is the norm, and not the exception, in schools. ✊🏾

Based on my experience and personal interaction with both of them, this article confirms what I already knew: they are definitely a Dynamic Duo and Harding University is blessed to have them.

I’m super excited to see the “so what” from the strategic, chess-like, legislative ban on DEI activities in higher education. As a corporate leader and thinker, I wonder will companies suffer on the balance sheet from the loss of talent that DEI brings. As an Attorney, I foresee the lawsuits caused by the imagined tribal empowerment of mid-level hiring managers and untrained HR professionals when developing their best qualified talent acquisition “corporate vision.” As a military leader, I observed the frayed alliances, fragile, and self-centered mindset of each of the marginalized minority classes of the DEI community and the lack of commitment to each others plight and to the greater equity-based movement. I suspected that each group in the DEI only cared about its sub-group. As a Baylor doctoral student, I possess fascination and deep-interest in the DEI communities’ response to these well-executed attacks and deliberate backlash on DEI. I wonder will the DEI community respond in kind or does this prove my hypothesis that the DEI class was too individualized, too self-focused, too uncooperative, and too anti-DEI to ever be strategically aligned as a collective. #DEIbacklash #warondei #deidownfall  https://lnkd.in/gmht9HFS

Congratulations to Elicia Savvas on being a recipient of a Churchill Fellowship for 2023! This prestigious award will give Elicia a once in a lifetime opportunity to travel the world to investigate child centred legal services in child welfare law. This project will investigate different approaches to children's legal services that meet the legal and non-legal needs of children/young people in the child protection system in a trauma informed and culturally safe way. Drawing on the experience of children's law services in the US and Scotland, it will focus on how input from children and people with lived experience of the child protection system can improve legal services; and how multidisciplinary services and legal assistance across different areas of law can be used to respond to the whole of children's needs in coordinated way to reduce entry into the criminal justice system and future child protection involvement. https://lnkd.in/gPeUkxru

Building bridges for lower socioeconomic backgrounds Tonight I will be joining a panel at a BYP Network in Leeds discussing Goal setting and career growth strategies with a focus on Black young professionals. With Leeds continuing to grow economically and the divide widening how can we enable people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds into positions of affluence. 1. Strengths: Understanding and promoting some of the unique strengths of coming from these environments. 2. Education: Supporting teachers to understand nuances, coaching and implementing restorative practices. 3. Removing career barriers: Moving to strength based interviews and diversifying access to entry and applications. 4. Enabling programmes: To support career development and promoting alternate career paths. 5. Community & collaboration: Supporting community programmes with funding as well as private sector and leaders involvement. 6. Promotion and recognition: Promoting those who have come from diverse backgrounds and creating a link to the community to inspire the next generation.
