The vote tomorrow, Tuesday 12 March, in the European Parliament plenary on the amendment of the #WeightsandDimensionsDirective amendment will be a crucial signal towards Member State ministries who are yet to formulate their opinions on opening the door to heavier and longer trucks performing #longdistance #freighttransport across internal borders of the #europeanunion.

As North Sea Neighbours, the Netherlands and the UK are committed to ensuring the maritime sector contributes to realising a net-zero economy. Our governments share a concrete commitment to support the establishment of green shipping corridors between our countries. The Netherlands, together with the UK, aims to open a joint call (competition) for feasibility studies investigating Green Shipping Corridors focused on routes between The Netherlands and the UK: we want to better understand what emission reductions could be realised by a green corridor and the required adjustments and investments in ports, infrastructure and ships. Today during #LISW23, we will bring together 🇳🇱 and 🇬🇧 businesses and policy and decision makers to explore the facilitation and development of Green Shipping Corridors - specific maritime routes decarbonised from end to end - port to port - including both land-side infrastructure and vessels. Waterborne transport has the lowest emissions per km per unit transported, but only smart & zero-emission shipping will put us on course to becoming truly sustainable. Green Shipping Corridors can help accelerate adoption of alternatives to petroleum-based fuels in the maritime industry, which in turn can reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Setting up such routes involves using zero-emission fuel or energy, putting in place refuelling or recharging infrastructure at ports, and deploying zero-emission capable vessels to demonstrate cleaner, more environmentally-friendly shipping on a given route.
