Last month, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Ireland launched its brand-new national air quality forecast to provide greater information to the public regarding expected air quality in Ireland. The developed forecast system is based on VITO’s #ATMOSYS #airquality modelling technology and was realised together with local partners under the EU-LIFE Emerald project. The forecast provides maps, which are displayed on the EPA’s public information website, airquality.ie, that show the predicted daily air quality for up to three days -"Today", “Tomorrow” and the “Day after Tomorrow”. Despite generally good air quality in Ireland, there are local hotspots, mainly due to solid fuel burning (PM2.5) for household heating and traffic emissions (NO2). This prompts the EPA to strengthen air quality modelling. The maps also serve as awareness tools, educating citizens on their impact. In the coming year, the ATMOSYS technology will also be used to deliver near-real-time (March 2024) and high-resolution annual air quality maps for the entire country (June 2024). It discussed transport in a changing geopolitical context, the need for an inclusive and homogeneous #transport#transition, and the crucial point of #competitiveness in the EU.

"It is our society that would be the biggest winner in the end if we manage to transform rail freight and make it fit for the 21st century. It should be the citizens to assess the costs vs. benefits of the #DAC project." International Union of Wagon Keepers (UIP) President David Zindo, was part of the panel with Dr. Sigrid Evelyn Nikutta, Peter Füglistaler, Mark Topal Gökceli and Paolo Pagliero debating the urgency and challenges of the implementation of the #DigitalAutomaticCoupler. While we "have no time to waste...or else the patient is already dead", as Peter Füglistaler underlined, David Zindo pointed also to the strategic importance of investing in the #DAC because otherwise rail freight cannot deliver what customers are asking for: more #efficiency,#reliability,#flexibility. 👉 And if we cannot convince (more) customers to use rail for their freight transport then the #GreenDeal objectives suffer a hard blow! Because rail with its very green energy and environmental credentials is one of the strongest allies to reduce the impact transport exerts today on the planet: #Co2emissions, #NoisePollution, #congestion, #HabitFragmentation etc. ... and this in the end is what Europe aspires to achieve for the good of the planet and its citizens. 💪 #DAC is therefore not so much an opportunity but a necessity! 💚 *** The panel was organised on 2 April by EDDP under Europe's Rail Joint Undertaking in cooperation with the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024 during the Connecting Europe Days.
