“UIP works for a systemic digitalisation of rail freight.” On the occasion of our upcoming #KeepersSummit2024 on 30 May, our UIP President David Zindo sat down with Ferpress, Italian news agency specializing in the world of rail. In the interview they explore especially what rail freight stands to gain from a systemic digitalisation led by the implementation of #DAC. With a focus on the potential that the Digital Automatic Coupler can unlock, David Zindo makes a point of emphasizing its added value for society: “By investing in the DAC, Member States and EU Institutions are saving on a much bigger bill they inevitably have to foot by continuing to pay the price for emissions, pollution, congestion, state aid etc. (…) The EU has set goals in order to achieve the Green Deal objectives and we all know why we have to do everything we can to get there: to preserve our planet for future generations.” Check out the article in English on our website 👉 https://lnkd.in/eHs-4XiZ The original interview in Italian is available here 👉 https://lnkd.in/e4kdiRHE Happy reading!

The ETB’s response on the draft Regulation (EU) 2019/1242 with regards to strengthening CO2 standards for new trailers ⚖ Exploring the EU's regulation and its impact for fleet operators, we raise key concerns about its practicality in our latest paper. While supporting efforts to facilitate low-carbon freight transportation, the European Commission proposed targets far exceed what industry analysis indicates is technically achievable with current and near-future solutions. 🔗 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dsjc_aGr Join us in this critical dialogue for sustainable progress! #FleetManagement #Sustainability #Transportation

❌ In its current form, the proposed EU directive on "Weights & Dimensions" will lead to a significant shift from rail to road. If we take the goals of the European Green Deal seriously, there is no way around sustainable rail transport. 🚆🌲 ✔️ What we need more than ever is fair competition that takes into account the external costs of CO2 emissions, road safety and the huge need to modernise road infrastructure. We explicitly support higher weights for electric trucks, but this must not be used as a cover to increase the weight of traditional internal combustion engines. 🙌 It's great to see that yesterday's #RFF press conference generated so much media coverage. 59% of Europeans believe that mega trucks will lead to an increase in energy consumption, according to a representative survey conducted by the French market research institute Harris Interactive. 🔋⚡ ➡️ If the EU Weights & Dimensions Directive is adopted in its current form, rail freight will become even less attractive than road freight. What we need more than ever is fair competition that takes into account the external costs of CO2 emissions, road safety and the huge need to modernise road infrastructure. 🏁 The EU Council of Transport Ministers is due to take a final decision in mid-June. Please share this video, we need to change course now. Get all the details at: 👉 https://ow.ly/ixIM50RGSXx #RailFreightForward #RFF ÖBB Rail Cargo Group

Combined Transport needs to outperform if we are to meet the energy efficiency, fossil fuel decoupling, decarbonisation and clean air objectives of the European Union. Combined Transport and its zero-carbon door-to-door version, needs to grow by an average of 5% per year until 2050 in order to achieve the doubling of rail freight market share. The needs: • €16,5 billion of annual investment into the rail infrastructure to establish the harmonised TEN-T parameters including a 4-metre loading gauge, as well as 22,5t axle load and 740m train length. • €1,5 billion of annual investments into intermodal assets like terminals, loading units, intermodal wagons, skeleton trailers and digitalisation. • The creation of a supportive regulatory environment that grants adequate quality and quantity of train paths to intermodal freight trains. Yet another political setback for rail freight! 😞 We regret yesterday’s decision by the European Parliament to open the door to the cross-border traffic of longer and heavier trucks throughout the EU. Why, you ask? As already pointed out in a joint study 👉https://lnkd.in/gxg2FkSF, the introduction of 44 t trucks and EMS combinations will lead to: 🚨 a #reverse #modalshift from rail to road due to less competitiveness because - road transport will be able to reduce its costs by up to 25 % - intermodal transport operations will become more complex 🚨 higher #externalities at the expense of the planet and society (energy demand, CO2 emissions, pollution, accidents, road degradation, etc.) It is not difficult to see how these developments go in the exact opposite direction of the declared objectives of the #GreenDeal, while undermining the necessary complementarity and cooperation between modes of transport! A weak consolation 👀 UIP acknowledges the few safeguards introduced by the Parliament, notably the obligation on EU Member States to condition the introduction of European modular systems to prior assessments of their impact on the environment, traffic volumes, modal cooperation, and modal splits. One last strand of hope ☝ The legislative process is not over yet. The ball is now in the court of the EU Member States. We hope that the ‘giga liners’ will not see the light of the day on EU roads but we stand ready to come forward with proposals that guarantee the full technical and operational compatibility of all loading units used in road transport with the railway system. #StayTuned #NoToGigaliners #FutureOfRailFreight

📰 [Press Release] On the 7th of November, the European Commission proposed an ambitious amendment that will strengthen the role of inland waterways and rail in combined transport. ⛴ As a result; emissions, congestion and other harmful externalities of transport can be reduced. Ports call on the co-legislators to ensure that the ambition of the proposal is maintained and that combined transport is brought into the 21st century. ▶ read more https://lnkd.in/ecnDH39s #inlandwaterways #ports #combinedtransport
