More rail usage data published: The ORR have just published their origin-destination matrix data for 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 on the Rail Data Market Place (in addition to the 2021-22 data that was already available). raildata.org.uk There was a lot of interest in this dataset when the 2021-22 data was published, but also a lot of interest in what pre-Covid usage looks like. I'm advised data for 2022-23 will be published in the final week of February. https://lnkd.in/ew9MfQUM https://lnkd.in/eWMNiD7r https://lnkd.in/eE7tZx_r

We need to accelerate! #ClimateChange does not wait... #Railways have not increased their modal share in the past decade, despite being the most #sustainable #transportmode. The modal share of #railtransport in Europe is stagnating (ca 7 % and 13 % for passenger and freight). #International #railtraffic is significant only for freight (over 50% of total). #DataSpacesTuesday ▪️ Introducing the European Rail Data Space – Europe's rail community is coming together to build a high-speed data ecosystem for the rail. Europe's Rail Joint Undertaking, a European partnership on rail research and innovation, is on a mission to create a high-capacity, integrated European railway network by breaking barriers to interoperability and providing solutions for seamless integration across traffic management, vehicles, and infrastructure. The aim is to accelerate the adoption and implementation of services and innovations, tapping into the vast potential of digitalization. Europe's rail supply industry is a global leader, but it also faces challenges at the international level. Jointly conceived, designed, and developed innovative solutions will not only strengthen the competitiveness of the European rail supply industry but also support increased usage while delivering services at reduced costs. And that's where a Rail Data Space comes in. The Rail Data Space focuses on innovative solutions for the European rail network and mobility management, while offering a common data sharing capability to all other involved players. Key highlights of the European Rail Data Space: • Enhancing competitiveness and sustainability for the rail industry. • Creating new services and products through shared data assets. • Integrating rail transportation into a comprehensive mobility system. • Accommodating widely accepted data models. Europe's Rail Joint Undertaking’s mission is a bold step towards an efficient, sustainable, and integrated European rail system. The Rail Data Marketplace is making great progress with 162 organisations and individuals registered users. It contains a wealth of data - some brand new - that can help drive innovation and improve the customer experience on the railway. As well as live train information, it provides data on accessibility, the environment, tickets, assets, fares and stations. One of the latest additions, the Slim Origin Destination Matrix, was published onto the Rail Data Marketplace last month by the ORR. It's a new dataset, having never been published before and its release required agreement with all the Train Operating Companies, something that was achieved at the Open Data Champion forum. The dataset shows the number of journeys between an origin and destination stations for 2021-22 and has attracted lots of interest since it could prove very useful to a range of organisations going forward. The Rail Data Marketplace was initiated by the Rail Sector Deal, led the Rail Supply Group, which secured £10m of matched funding from industry and government. It provides a central platform for finding and sharing rail data. RDM brings together rail data sources and related services in one place. It offers a simple and open way to share data from across the rail sector and beyond. I'm all for evidence-based communication.
The DfT has released their rail statistics factsheet today. These statistics are really useful for the industry to help us tell our story. But the data on its own doesn’t give us the whole picture or provide meaningful insight. I have worked with many clients over recent years to help provide context and qualitative analysis to put the numbers in context. This has helped organisations to enhance their policy asks, present meaningful benchmarking and develop a narrative. If I can help you with this give me shout -I’d love to talk. https://lnkd.in/ewPv_RXz #rail #strategy #statistics #data #railways #insight #analysis #railway #benchmarking
