The closure of Alstom is devastating for workers, for Derby, and for Britain’s rail industry. Alstom UK’s managing director, Nicholas Crossfield says there has been “continued delay in providing us with certainty and clarity”. “A minimum level of workload” was agreed by Government but not delivered. The Transport Secretary, Mark Harper, has had months to find a solution to prevent these job losses. He hasn’t treated this situation with the urgency it deserves and has questions to answer on why he has failed to deliver on agreements to act to plug gaps in order schedules. Our rail industry needs certainty, stability and leadership. It has had none of these things, and avoidable job losses are the result. The Labour Party will work with offer a stable economy and investment climate. Our industrial strategy means we will partner with manufacturers to increase confidence in their long term future in the UK. The cancellation of the Northern leg of HS2, the constant changes to Northern Powerhouse Rail and the failure to give certainty to manufacturers all speak to an approach to rail that is simply nowhere near to meeting the demands of the industry or the country. Britain was the country that created the railways, but right now that legacy is being trashed and replaced by an approach that can only be described as managed decline.

MD at SELECT TALENT. Providing talent acquisition solutions across rail, transport and infrastructure sectors | WiR RIA EDI Charter Working Group member - UK Rail Industry |
Some really lovely feedback from a proposal in with a rail business yesterday. He was really surprised and impressed by the level of care, thought and detail that went into it. For us its understanding the situation, the person you want to attract and the variables that surround that piece of recruitment. For example, do you need a rail person or actually can we go outside of industry. Does that fit with your business strategy to diversify / add diversity? What kind of personality will push on your business without being disruptive? Where will we find these people, do they exist in the local labour market and how much are they getting paid? What's important to the candidate and what's going to make them want to apply / reply to us / you. All of this is the level of thought and detail that goes into each and every proposal and project that we deliver on. It's why we are different and take pride in doing a great job. A potential order for 10 new Elizabeth Line trains for Transport for London could help save jobs in Derby! Commenting on the developments, Darren Caplan, chief executive of the Railway Industry Association said: “Suppliers across the UK will hope current discussions between Ministers and all train manufacturers achieve a positive outcome. The future of rail businesses of all sizes, factories and jobs depends on the decisions taken by the Government now. “Immediate solutions are clearly needed to mitigate short-term risks, and sustain jobs and UK capability. But the Government urgently needs to bring forward invitations to tender for new procurements in the medium term and listen to industry proposals which have called for a level playing field for manufacturers to bid for the £3.6 billion of upcoming work orders.” What are your thoughts on these developments?
