Today, I presented at the RailTech conference in Utrecht on competition in international railway connections in Europe. Main message: competition can be a catalyst to improve international rail. Competition drives an improved service offering with lower ticket prices, realising a higher demand and therefor an increased revenue for both incumbent and new entrant. But even with the 4th Railway Package in place, there remain important obstacles to be resolved such as availability of maintenance facilities, access to passengers for sales and information and through ticketing to name the three most important. However, competition is not the silver bullet for any route or network and in order to be effective, should be organised.

The High-Speed Solution for an ever closer and sustainable Europe was discussed this week at the European Parliament According to the targets set in the EU Smart and Sustainable Mobility Strategy, high-speed rail must be doubled by 2030 and tripled by 2050. On behalf of Deutsche Bahn the PTV Group has conducted a study where a vision for the European High-Speed Network of 2050 is clearly pictured. This week the study was presented by Michael Peterson at the European Parliament. This presentation triggered a vital disussion and set the scene for next steps in the realisation of the vision. In another positive for 2023. We're finding the discussions around the ongoing development of the SFERA standards to be productive and important for our industry. In November we took part in the SFERA extended User Group Workshop in Paris at the UIC - International union of railways #UICrail#UICrail#UICrail - learning and contributing where we can add value. Focused on the future of DAS protocols in Europe we can see how the developments around interoperable and cross-border CDAS could really benefit European freight and passenger train companies.   #SFERA #CDAS #DAS #DIGITALRAILWAY #TTGEUROPE #UIC

The European rail sector is brimming with major activities to improve infrastructure. The Fehmarnbelt tunnel in Denmark, the plans for high-speed rail in Poland and the Czech Republic, the multi-billion plans for network upgrades in Germany and France and work on the Brenner Base Tunnel in the Alps are a few examples of the ongoing projects. I had a good meeting with Simon Bauer at Dansk Jernbaneforbund, where I could talk about the activities of the NLRA - Nordic Light Rail Association. I hope that the meeting will lead to a webinar describing the collective agreement for tram drivers in Denmark. That would be an interesting topic, certainly beyond the borders of Denmark. What can we do to attract more drivers to Tramway and keep them in their jobs? What can a collective agreement contribute to this? To succeed, Europe must be connected. For Europe to be connected, there must be investment. More high-speed trains, better cross-border connections, night train services, urban rail projects and ERTMS signalling will create jobs, boost regions across Europe, drive growth and improve the quality of life for tens of millions of European citizens.
