UIC publishes its 2022 Activity Report. In its activity report, UIC looks back on the year 2022, which marks its 100th anniversary. 2022 was rich in results and progress on flagship projects for the international rail community. Beyond being the milestone of UIC’s 100th anniversary, 2022 also initiated a period of consolidation, continuity and stability. For the first time, UIC is also publishing financial figures in this report. The activity report can be found at: https://urlz.fr/nN1E

Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking (EU-Rail), established by the Council Regulation (EU) 2021/2085 of 19 November 2021, is the new European partnership on rail research and innovation established under the Horizon Europe programme (2020-2027) and the universal successor of the Shift2Rail Joint Undertaking. The vision of EU-Rail is to deliver, via an integrated system approach, a high capacity, flexible, multi-modal and reliable integrated European railway network by eliminating barriers to interoperability and providing solutions for full integration for European citizens and cargo. To support the future increased usage of rail, the sector must deliver services at reduced cost compared to today, by tackling all the elements of the rail lifecycle, and improve its interaction with other transport modes. In this webinar, Javier Ibáñez de Yrigoyen will present the Europe's Rail Joint Undertaking Programme focus-areas and address how to become competitive. More information at: https://lnkd.in/eGXuHQCx

🚂 High Level Freight Meeting (HLFM) Our annual conference with European rail freight CEOs and #EU officials, co-organised by #UICrail and CER (Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies), was a resounding success in Brussels on 5-6 December. 📌 The event showcased the latest innovations and regulatory shifts shaping the European rail freight landscape. The strong presence of European Commission and European Parliament Members underscored the pivotal role of #railfreight in realising the European #GreenDeal. However, the need for the sector to accelerate was emphasised. Challenge accepted! At UIC, we thrive on challenges, leveraging our technical know-how to propel the rail freight forward. Here is a snapshot of our activities from the #HLFM programme: ✅ #DAC: UIC leads the Europe's Rail Joint Undertaking’s System Pillar – Task 4, focusing on harmonising standards and operations for a seamless migration; and #EuropeanDACDeliveryProgramme Stakeholder Management activities under the DACcord project, pivotal for DAC development and deployment. ✅ #DPRail: UIC coordinates this EU co-financed project, uniting key players to establish a digital ecosystem for rail freight , ensuring seamless #TAFTSI compliant #dataexchange and #connectivity to multimodal operations. ✅ #CombinedTransport: UIC supports railway undertakings with technical expertise to assure the changes to the #WeightsDimensions Directive and #CombinedTransport Directive bolster #multimodality and #modalshift to rail. 💡 Curious to learn more about UIC’s #freight activities? Europe’s leading rail CEOs gathered for the 73rd General Assembly of CER, to discuss the ambitious work programme for 2024 and beyond🚆 👉 Long-term vision and key priorities for the European rail sector. 👉 Manifesto 2024-29 ''On Track For Europe''. 👉 Position paper on European #ERTMS Governance. 👉 Position paper on Multimodal Passenger Rights. CER Chair Andreas Matthä, CEO ÖBB Holding-AG: ”The European rail sector supports the European Green Deal and looks forward to boosting the railway system into the digital age with a joint effort in the next term. Europe needs more rail, but rail also needs more Europe. Rail infrastructure investments in Europe require an integrated approach to planning and financing. It must be ensured that standards do not drift apart between financially stronger and financially weaker member states. Therefore, the rail sector needs long-term financial commitments from politicians, including an increase of CEF funds.” CER Executive Director Alberto Mazzola: “After almost two centuries of existence, European railways remain a future-oriented transport solution, strategically placed to help the EU deliver on its economic, social and environmental promises. In the CER Manifesto, railways commit to provide for the new generations of Europeans: better passenger services for all, including high-speed connections between capitals and major cities; digital rail freight logistics integrated with other modes, leading to zero-emission European logistics; a reliable, safe, high-speed infrastructure and at the same time improvement of the existing network by modernisation and digitalisation. We call on the EU and Member States for a sustainable investment policy to continue prioritising and supporting rail”. SPF Mobility and Transport, Technical feasibility study for Vision Rail 2040 in Belgium SMA has been commissioned by the Belgian Federal Public Service (SPF) Mobility and Transport to study scenarios for rail services and operations in Belgium up to 2040, based on the principles for developing services defined in the federal government's Vision Rail 2040. The study will help to define - on the basis of different variants and in collaboration with Infrabel and SNCB - the outlook for the development of the national rail network. The result will provide a future transportation plan that quantifies the potential for journey times, service frequencies and interchange stations as well as the associated investment costs and the impact on the modal split of rail (assessments in collaboration with partners). Regulation. With it, the European rail sector has the guidelines and the structure to work in tandem with Europe’s goals. However, this regulation must become better. Business should not be burdened with excessive red tape. In the rail sector, we call for a greater harmonisation of requirements across a range of issues, so rules are simpler and easier for everyone to follow. With less focus on navigating complex rules, more work can be put into delivering the rail products and networks which can bring Europe closer together.
