A really interesting document from the recent EU Competitiveness Council. It highlights the work European governments will do over the next few years to enhance industrial competitiveness and security In particular it set out how governments intend to bolster European capacity in production and in research and innovation. It wants to do this by encouraging cooperation between industry (including SMEs), research and technology organisations, higher education institutions, funding agencies and relevant public authorities to boost innovation and accelerate market uptake of new technologies.. It sets out an ambition to enhance industrial ecosystems in areas including energy-intensive industries and mobility. Link here: https://lnkd.in/eqW9mgTa This is one of the core reasons why the Global Centre Of Rail Excellence - a world class facility for rail research, testing and innovation - remains such an attractive commercial proposition. Nations across the globe are seeking to innovate their way to Net Zero, enhance national economic security and develop stronger and create more sustainable jobs. Supporting the development of an effective rail and mobility innovation ecosystem to help achieve these ambitions is something GCRE is very keen to do. #GCRE #GlobalCentreOfRailExcellence #Innovation

Portugal Railway Summit, the most important event in the national railway sector, took place at the National Railway Museum, from May 21-22. The event organised by PFP - Portuguese Railway Cluster Platform Association covered key topics on the future of the national railroad and showcased innovations from industry leaders, national companies and stakeholders for a more efficient, integrated, and sustainable railway. João Cortinhas, our Transportation Business Developer, presented Efacec’s Training Charging Station, to be installed in Denmark, which will allow the charging of Battery Electric Multiple Units (BEMU) in just 10 minutes while trains are standstill. The solution which includes a significant added value component of Efacec’s engineering reinforces our commitment to sustainability and to decarbonization, helping the transition from diesel to electric trains operation by avoiding the installation of catenary along the entire track. Efacec won two pioneering contracts in Denmark, which continues to express its preference for Portuguese engineering and technology. #Transportation #Efacec #EmpoweringTheFuture

The UIC is taking part in a number of events or meetings in Beijing this week. This is an opportunity to continue discussions with two of its members from the Asia-Pacific region, China State Railway Group Co (CR), Ltd and China Academy of Railway Sciences Corporation Limited (CARS). One of the highlights of the week is UIC's participation yesterday in the 4th World Railway Cooperation & Development Forum / Modern Railways. Modern Railways is one of those must-attend events in the railway agenda. During his speech, François DAVENNE highlighted that as the less emitting (and by far) mode of transport Railways have a responsibility to contribute strongly to the decarbonation of transport. He believes that it is Railways duty to demonstrate that the increase of the rail and public transport modal share is not only necessary but also desirable. A new transport paradigm where most of the journeys can be achieved by rail, public transport and active mobility would benefit to cities by reducing congestion, improving air quality and more generally the life quality. He insisted on two ideas: the need of a clear policy vision and the role of innovation. -The policy vision is particularly needed in those times where the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals implementation will imply to enter a pro-active planification that should embrace transport, energy and town planning. -The other dimension of this success is innovation. As the network is growing and taking an increasingly central place both for passenger and freight it unleashes new ideas to better manage interconnexions, to lower the costs and finally to redefine the services offered. It is in the DNA of #UICrail to follow these innovations and to help to their adoption through shared standards and specifications. Depending of the subjects, UIC can be leading the transformation in issuing landmark specifications. For instance, concerning 5G UIC is leading the specification work with the FRMCS project that will provide the telecom backbone for future applications, including the uptake of ATO. FRMCS specifications are being finalized in Europe and UIC hope to be able to work rapidly on the Asian use cases, relying in particular on CR and CARS expertise. #Innovation #FRMCS #Specifications

During this week in Beijing, #UICrail also participated yesterday in the International Railway Innovation Forum 2023, co-organised by UIC's International Railway Research Board (IRRB) and the China Academy of Railway Sciences (CARS). The event provided an opportunity to discuss Asian research priorities in railway development and their relevance to railway innovation in the marketplace. An important part of the debate focused on the added value that the railway community will derive from the UIC Regional R&I Competence Hubs initiative. During the Forum, François DAVENNE, in his opening speech, underlined the fact that Asia-Pacific region, and China in particular, plays a central role in the global innovation process. Some of the key issues at stake include : -digital developments and the future implementation of the FRMCS, -in the field of innovation and research, UIC welcome the great involvement of Chinese colleagues in the International Railway Research Board (IRRB), but also in several Sector Expert Teams (SET), namely those concerning Data Communication & Driver’s Cab and Traction Experts -participation in standardisation activities The chair of the IRRB, Sanjiv Bhutani, Indian Railways, took part in a round table discussion on "cooperation to deliver innovations on the railways". Christian Chavanel, UIC Director Railway System Department, took part in a panel moderated by Mr Bhutani, answering the following question: What are the areas you feel Railways, Universities & Research Institutes shall collaborate to help railway become more reliable, greener and safest mode of transport? Christian Chavanel mentioned the publication by UIC of its “Vision of Rail in 2030”: https://urlz.fr/otUq He insisted on the fact that there is for the first time today a unique momentum for a radical modal shift from road and aviation to railways worldwide. Adaptation to climate change is becoming a major concern, shared worldwide, and the urgency of which has been recalled by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). That is the reason why UIC strongly supports the radical modal shift from road and aviation to railways that our children need worldwide. To this end, UIC IRRB has to focus its efforts on: -Increasing Capacity of the railway network; -Increasing the Quality of service and continuous improvement of railway services; -Helping railways accelerate the cycle of innovation. #Innovation
