🤔 This is interesting. I'm all for tradition in football, but this should open the doors for more clubs to join the party. 🗞 Media often talk about the big clubs when they talk about the Champions League, but let's not forget the clubs that work extremely hard to reach a qualifying round of one of these great competitions. Witnessing Sportsklubben Brann Vs. AZ Alkmaar in the final qualifying round of The UEFA Conference League in 2023 really underlined how much it means for clubs and players to have a chance to play in Europe 💰 Of course, money is a big part of why it's so important to qualify for Europe. Clubs can gain massive competetive advantages in their home leagues. More clubs in European competition = more opportunity for growth 📉 But what about the level of competition? Will the quality of the games suffer because UEFA add more clubs? I don't think so. I think that the level of the teams that has been "knocking on the door" is not far behind those who just manages to sneak in, this goes for all three competitions 📈 The benefits for players and clubs, other then financial, is that more players can get testet at a higher level, this should help increase the level of play from matchday via the next weeks training sessions to the games in their home leagues 🤷♂️ And what about the format? Will it work? I don't know! I think it's refreshing, and I can't help but wonder.. if it works, will we see the same format in the Euros down the line? ⚽️ I am all for opportunity, and I think this is an interesting way of increasing revenues, lifting the level of more players, and giving opportunities for more fans to experience the excitement of European football 🧐 These are just my thoughts, what do you think?

Based on the application of rook polynomials (https://lnkd.in/gVq92yXi), one can see that the rook polynomial for this situation is (1 x)^5*(1 5x 5x^2 x^3), which implies a total of 10595 possible drawing outcomes. Out of these 10595 possible outcomes, 1501 would involve Man City playing Inter. An interesting question is how to derive this without resorting to brute force enumeration…

Under the new system, teams eliminated from the Champions League will no longer drop down into the lower-tier competitions, a shift that UEFA argues will inject unparalleled excitement into each match. Guaranteeing at least 8 games for each team, up from 6, aims to enhance fan engagement and open new revenue streams through additional broadcasting and sponsorship opportunities. However, this format raises countless concerns. More games could lead to increased player fatigue and scheduling conflicts, issues that have already plagued football for years. This change also challenges teams to balance competitiveness with player health and well-being, given that they will compete in their respective leagues and domestic cups alongside UEFA competitions. The absence of a safety net for teams to drop into lower competitions may also intensify the pressure on clubs, potentially widening the gap between football's elite and the rest. Despite these challenges, the format change reflects UEFA's ambition to innovate and expand the allure of European football. It presents an opportunity to showcase deeper squad talents and adapt strategic approaches to game management. Yet, as we edge closer to its implementation, the football community remains divided, questioning the new format: 1. Is this change necessary or solely financially motivated? 2. How will players respond to more games? 3. Was this new format a necessitated counter proposal to the potential threat of the Super League? Only time will tell. For now, we must keep a close eye on whether the benefits of more matches and financial influx will indeed outweigh the logistical and physical demands placed on teams. BIG NEWS in the world of football yesterday ⚽ 🌍 It's been a topic of discussion over the last few weeks on various media platforms, and the expected release of this news was inevitable. Yesterday, UEFA announced the new format of the UEFA Champions League ⬇ (The video below describes how it will run going forward) ⬇ They've decided to abandon the group-stage model that we've all become so familiar with and spiced things up with a new league model instead. People's opinions on the new format are naturally divided. A few fed up of the constant changes we're seeing in recent years in football, while others are excited to see what the new layout can bring from an entertainment standpoint. My opinion... When UEFA changed the format so away goals didn't count for anything anymore, we saw an increase in what I would call 'stagnant fixtures'. Teams are happy to go away from home and sit in a low block, reducing the number of chances created for the opposition. Is it too far to say teams are 'happy' to lose 1-0 and back themselves to score more on their home turf? I think the new format will bring back some excitement to every game the champions league has to offer. An increase in end-end fixtures and teams setting up with an attack minded approach (unless you play under Diego Simeone). On one hand I agree with the traditionalist and believe there was nothing wrong with the old format, but we can't go back. Moving forward, I think this is a step in the right direction to get the excitement of a Tuesday/ Wednesday champions league fixture back. What are your thoughts on it?
