"The Port of Long Beach achieved its busiest June on record, driven by vibrant consumer spending, potential tariff increases and ongoing labor contract negotiations at seaports on the East and Gulf coasts. Dockworkers and terminal operators moved 842,446 twenty-foot equivalent units in June, up 41.1% from the same month last year and surpassing the previous record set in June 2022 by 7,034 TEUs. In 2023, the Port of Prince Rupert handled 23.5 million tonnes of cargo, translating to a decrease of 5% compared to the volumes recorded in the previous year. According to a statement, this marks the third consecutive year of declining volume and reflects the challenges posed by the dynamic nature of global shipping routes, subdued demand for imports, and the competitive landscape with other North American trade gateways for discretionary cargo.

Import container throughput at the San Pedro Bay ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach is booming, with the neighbour facilities reporting year-on-year growth of 19% and 23.5%, respectively, for January. The spike in demand for Asia-US west coast services, partly driven by Panama Canal transit restrictions, the Red Sea crisis and looming labour contract negotiations on the east coast, has encouraged ocean carriers to deploy extra loaders – and in the case of ONE and Wan Hai, to launch a new joint service, the Asia Pacific 1 (AP1). “We are ready to grow our volumes and hope to see continued growth through 2024 as we gradually recapture market share,” said CEO of Long Beach Port Mario Cordero. In August, the Georgia Ports Authority (Port of Savannah) witnessed a 28% year-on-year decline in cargo volumes, with a total of 413,294 TEUs.
