💡Did you know? Multiple myeloma is a type of bone marrow cancer. Bone marrow is the spongy tissue at the centre of some bones that produces the body's blood cells. It's called multiple myeloma as the cancer often affects several areas of the body, such as the spine, skull, pelvis and ribs. The use of cancer immunotherapies to treat cancers including #multiplemyeloma is rapidly growing. #CRS is a rate limiting side effect, associated with emerging #cancer immunotherapies. #POLB 001 is a phase 2 ready, orally administered p38 MAPK inhibitor, which has the potential to prevent CRS in patients receiving cancer immunotherapies. #MultipleMyeloma #CancerAwareness #POLB

World's first jab to stop skin cancer being tested in UK patients Experts say the treatment has huge potential and is "one of the most exciting developments in modern cancer therapy". It's custom-built for each person and tells the body to identify cancer cells and stops the disease returning. The jab is an individualised neoantigen therapy (INT) and can trigger the immune system to fight the patient's specific type of cancer. To create the personalized therapy, a tumor sample is removed and its DNA sequenced - with artificial intelligence also playing a role. Although the immune tumour microenvironment (TME) serves as a source of therapeutic targets, it is also considered a friend or foe to tumour-directed therapies. This is readily illustrated by the importance of T cells in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), culminating in the advent of immune checkpoint therapy in combination with cytotoxic chemotherapy as standard of care for both early and advanced-stage TNBC, as well as recent promising signs of efficacy in a subset of hormone receptor-positive disease.

Research from Sweden has used ‘bubbles’, that are released by cells as messengers, to develop a potentially more effective way to target the tumours of breast and skin cancer and help with treatment. The main function of these small ‘bubbles’, called extracellular vesicles (EVs), is to aid communication between cells. So researchers at the Karolinska Institutet loaded EVs with a drug used in cancer chemotherapy. They then attached antibodies to the surface, of the modified EVs which helped them to target specific tumours, by delivering the drug only to cancer cells, while ignoring healthy cells. When used on mice, with breast and skin cancer, this method improved tumour targeting – with 80% of the treated mice surviving, while survival rates were 0% in the untreated mice. Oral cancer, also called mouth cancer, is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the mouth (oral cavity) or the part of the throat in the back of the mouth (oropharynx), which is known as pharyngeal or oropharyngeal cancer. Breast cancer remains the most prevalent cancer in the United States in 2024, with an estimated 313,510 new cases. Prostate cancer follows as the second most common, with lung cancer ranking third, and colorectal cancer, which includes colon and rectal cancer, accounting for 152,810 new cases. Globally, breast, lung, bowel, and prostate cancers are the most common types, representing over 40% of all cancer diagnoses.
