Indigenous partnerships and a deep respect for Traditional knowledge are central to the National Environmental Science Program.
Our four research hubs partner with Indigenous rangers, Traditional Owners and First Nations communities across Australia to:
🍃ensure First Nations people are engaged in designing and implementing NESP research
🍃weave together Indigenous and western environmental knowledge systems, and apply Indigenous-led approaches to strengthening and sharing knowledge
🍃increase recognition of cultural values in decision making
🍃support Indigenous Australian’s aspirations to protect and manage land and sea Country.
These partnerships are helping deepen our shared leadership role, build Indigenous research capacity, realise shared benefits, and support positive environmental, social and economic outcomes.

These researchers tacked United Nations SDGs 13, 14, and
SDG 13 (Climate Action) addresses the pressing need to combat climate change and its impacts. Human-induced activities like the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial processes have led to a rapid increase in greenhouse gas emissions, resulting in global warming, erratic weather patterns, rising sea levels, and extreme weather events. Addressing climate change requires concerted efforts to reduce emissions, transition to renewable energy sources, and implement sustainable practices across industries.
SDG 14 (Life Below Water) aims to conserve and sustainably use marine resources. Oceans, which cover over 70% of the Earth's surface, are crucial for regulating the climate, providing food, supporting biodiversity, and generating oxygen. However, issues like overfishing, pollution, habitat destruction, and acidification threaten marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of millions of people dependent on marine resources. Protecting marine biodiversity, reducing plastic pollution, and establishing marine-protected areas are essential steps toward achieving this goal.
SDG 15 (Life on Land) focuses on protecting, restoring, and promoting the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems. Deforestation, land degradation, loss of biodiversity, and habitat destruction are some of the critical challenges faced on land. These issues not only threaten wildlife but also impact human communities that rely on healthy ecosystems for food, clean water, and livelihoods. Conservation efforts, reforestation, sustainable land management practices, and safeguarding endangered species are crucial for preserving terrestrial biodiversity.
Service, whether through advocacy, volunteering, education, or innovative solutions, can significantly contribute to these efforts. Engaging in activities that promote sustainability, reducing carbon footprints, supporting conservation projects, participating in beach clean-ups, advocating for policy changes, and investing in eco-friendly practices are ways individuals and organizations can actively contribute toward a more sustainable future for our planet and all life that depends on it.

When the National Science Challenges began, they were set up to concentrate on separate ecosystem and management areas – marine, freshwater and land.
A decade later, an interdisciplinary collaboration between Challenge researchers, drawing from the National Science Challenge’s research, has led to their publication being selected as one of 23 National Champions in this year’s international Frontiers Planet Prize.
