Great to see work underway in New South Wales (Australia) by James Cockayne and the Office of the NSW Anti-slavery Commissioner to help equip frontline workers in the #healthcare sector to identify #modernslavery 🔎. Engaging with the healthcare sector has important links to broader work businesses have been undertaking to train key operational workers to identify modern slavery, including: 🛑 understanding what red flags to look for, recognising in many situations frontline workers may have limited time with a person who may be exploited 🛑 considering how to effectively equip workers often already required to complete significant amounts of other training to understand modern slavery red flags 🛑 working through how to safely escalate concerns about red flags internally and the threshold for doing so, and 🛑 how to respond to a red flag without placing a person being exploited in more danger (such as by tipping off an offender) #humanrights #bizhumanrights

In honor of Patient Experience Week, here is a reflection on patient- and family-centered care. In my experience, this term is utilized frequently but not always well understood. The Institute for Patient- and Family-Centered Care (IPFCC) defines it as “an approach to the planning, delivery, and evaluation of health care that is grounded in mutually beneficial partnership among healthcare providers, patients, and families.” IPFCC additionally describes four core concepts of patient- and family-centered care as: -Respect and Dignity: Health care practitioners listen to and honor patient and family perspectives and choices. Patient and family knowledge, values, beliefs and cultural backgrounds are incorporated into the planning and delivery of care. -Information Sharing: Health care practitioners communicate and share complete and unbiased information with patients and families in ways that are affirming and useful. Patients and families receive timely, complete and accurate information in order to effectively participate in care and decision-making. -Participation: Patients and families are encouraged and supported in participating in care and decision-making at the level they choose. -Collaboration: Patients, families, health care practitioners, and health care leaders collaborate in policy and program development, implementation, and evaluation; in facility design; in professional education; and in research; as well as in the delivery of care. Check out this recent study published by Zhou et al., (2023) entitled "What does patient-centered communication look like?" South Carolina is a fast-growing state, and comfortably fits in the category of the world’s best given its large tertiary care hospitals, four medical schools, number of physician specialists and ample financial resources (when compared to others around the world). Most would conclude we are truly blessed. But are we? In a recent Harris Poll, only 27% of respondents nationwide felt that the health care system was meeting all their health needs. That means that more than 70% expressed some degree of dissatisfaction with our medical care system. Nearly 50% of respondents also reported they needed help to navigate the complexities of the American health system (82% of whom reported frustration and a feeling of being totally overwhelmed in the process). This Harris poll only scratches the surface. Last year, the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll found only 12% of respondents felt the health system met their needs. Multiple academic reports demonstrated the same thing. In fact, the evidence is quite clear: Just as it does in all other rankings, the United States also leads the world rankings in health system dissatisfaction. Critical issues affecting community health in rural areas, access to care and healthcare workforce shortages were the focus of the inaugural Transforming Community and Rural Healthcare: Digital Health and Workforce Innovation Symposium on Sept. 18. More than 350 healthcare leaders, professionals, administrators, researchers and educators attended the symposium, which Mayo Clinic Health System organized. "Our aim with the symposium is to enable participants to directly apply new transformative approaches to their community and rural health settings," says Darcy Reed, M.D., dean of Education for Mayo Clinic Health System and course director for the symposium. Here are a few key takeaways from the event. 1⃣ Everyone deserves access to the same level of care. Rural communities deserve quality healthcare like urban areas. Prominent speakers stressed the importance of bridging this gap. 2⃣ Digital care will be transformative for rural health. The symposium showcased a variety of presentations and workshops on ways in which digital health and artificial intelligence are transforming rural healthcare. 3⃣ Community partnerships will help build the workforce. Community partnerships and collaborative efforts are vital for addressing workforce shortages and enhancing healthcare equity in rural areas.
