We are thrilled to share that the University of California, Davis - School of Medicine has been named as one of the top institutions in the country for training students to practice in primary care settings! According to the annual “Best Medical Schools” rankings released today by U.S. News & World Report, UC Davis is in the Tier 1, or top, category for its leadership in educating students to work as primary care doctors. The rankings are a testament to the success the UC Davis School of Medicine has achieved for years in training students, residents and fellows to help fill a workforce shortage of primary care physicians. “The UC Davis School of Medicine continues to be a national leader in training the physician workforce needed to meet the needs of our diverse communities and advance health equity — especially in primary care,” said Susan Murin, interim dean of the UC Davis School of Medicine. “These rankings also show we continue to be among the leading medical research institutions committed to improving health and transforming lives." Today we broke ground on what will be the hospital of the future – the UC Davis Medical Center’s California Tower. The new tower will add nearly one million square feet of space to the eastern side of the existing medical center. It will include new operating rooms, an imaging center, leading edge facilities for pharmacy and burn care units, and about 334 private rooms for patients. More than 250 of the rooms are being designed for greater flexibility in the event of a patient surge such as a pandemic, massive wildfire or other disaster. These will easily convert into intensive-care-unit rooms with air isolation to treat patients of any level of hospitalization. “The addition of the California Tower to UC Davis Medical Center is a testament to our innovative forward thinking across our health system and main campus,” said UC Davis Chancellor Gary S. A new study by the UC Davis MIND Institute’s Sally Ozonoff and the Baby Siblings Research Consortium confirms that siblings of autistic children are about seven times more likely to be autistic themselves. Congratulations to Patient Escort Habidur Rehman, this month's Point of Pride (POP) Award winner! The POP Award recognizes the countless actions of empathy and kindness—large and small—that take place across our health system every day. The nomination reads: “I want to recognize Habidur for essentially saving a patient's life. Habidur was set to transport a Spanish-speaking patient to X-ray when he noticed that she looked pale and was saying something in Spanish. Having some experience with diabetes, Habidur quickly found a nurse who was able to check the patient's blood sugar, which was found to be dangerously low. We were able to quickly treat the patient, but if it wasn't for Habidur's astute awareness, this patient could have easily deteriorated without recognition until the next task was ordered. Thank you, Habidur, for your dedication to your patients and their care!" Habidur lived our patient promise, showing how every employee plays a vital role in providing care. The summer 2024 issue of Synthesis magazine is now available! The biannual magazine of UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center shares news about advanced treatments, promising scientific discoveries and efforts to reach out to the community. The magazine also includes progress being made at the cancer center in finding a cure for liver cancer and new technology bringing hope to pancreatic cancer patients. Another discovery may lead to a “switch” to kill cancer cells that could benefit patients including those with ovarian cancer. Readers will also learn about the link between cancer and poverty. A new report shows that lung, liver, stomach and cervical cancer rates are causing an unfair cancer burden for people in marginalized areas. In another article, learn why what people eat or have access to eat can affect their risk of cancer. The latest issue of Synthesis also introduces you to the wife of a U.S. Marine who shares that his sense of duty inspired him to give back after receiving treatment for a cancer that, after a gallant fight, eventually took his life. 🌟 Exciting bone health discovery! Our scientists, in collaboration with the University of California, San Francisco, have discovered a new hormone that may help build strong bones. The study results published in Nature sheds light on how breastfeeding women maintain robust bones even as calcium is stripped from their bones to support milk production. With over 200 million people affected by osteoporosis worldwide, this discovery holds significant potential for improving bone health in the broader population. Congratulations to Thomas H. We're excited to share that Marie Burns has been appointed interim director of the Center for Neuroscience (CNS)! Burns is a highly respected and active member of the UC Davis neuroscience community, and a CNS core faculty member since 2001. She brings a wealth of leadership experience and a distinguished career in vision neuroscience research to her new role. “Bridging a uniquely broad range of research topics and approaches, the Center for Neuroscience has been a national leader in multi-disciplinary neuroscience research for decades. I’m honored to step into the role of interim director during this transition," Burns said.
