Hi friends in science! The tissue is the issue… Another great work showing the power of blood proteomics and machine learning to predict organ aging and its effects on health outcomes. We used such prediction models & proteomics in heart failure in the past and I truly believe that we can uncover a lot about the finctioning of our tissues without the need of invasive sampling or extensive omics analysis. In a groundbreaking study, the team demonstrates the power and potential of advanced proteomics by revealing that our blood contains information that allows us to understand how our individual organs are aging. Through the measurement of over 5,000 circulating blood proteins from around 6,000 individuals, the study explores organ-specific aging “clocks” to understand their interpretability and predictive power. It is well understood that we all age differently. This work proposes a new approach to monitoring aging at an organ level, offering us novel personalized insights for guiding longevity care and interventions. Human plaque myofibroblasts are an excellent model to study the mechanisms of atherosclerosis! Check out our new paper in JAHA! Michele Buono, Ernest Diez Benavente, Lotte Slenders, Daisey Methorst, Daniëlle Tessels, Eloi Mili, Roxy Finger, Daniek Kapteyn, Mark Daniels, Noortje Van den Dungen, Jorg Calis, Barend Mol, Gert Jan de Borst, Dominique De Kleijn, Gerard Pasterkamp, Hester den Ruijter Plaque myofibroblasts play a significant role in the onset and progression of atherosclerotic disease, and yet, vascular smooth muscle cells are still dominantly used in research despite clear phenotypic differences. In our latest paper, we introduce a novel method to isolate and culture myofibroblast cells directly from plaques, ensuring they retain their natural properties and making them a more accurate in vitro model for atherosclerosis studies.
