Call for Papers, Renaissance Society of America Annual Meeting, Boston, MA, 20-22 March 2025
Crafters of Laughter: Comic Representation as Innovation
Session Organizers: Sandra Cheng (NYC College of Technology) and Kimberlee A. Cloutier-Blazzard (Independent Scholar)
Seeking paper proposals on the artistry of comic representation in the Early Modern period. Humorous imagery has the potential to critique societal norms, behaviors, and institutions via the mode of satire; to foster community by finding common ground through comic laughter; to challenge stereotypes by presenting characters and situations in unexpected and unconventional ways; or to provoke through inappropriate or harmful visual references. This session explores how artists exploited the potential of comic subjects as means to display their own powers of invention by developing new humorous themes and/or by pushing the boundaries of propriety.
Optimally, we desire a range of papers related to all aspects of social class, the genres of portraiture and quotidian life, plus other still-to-be-identified aspects of comic representation. We welcome papers that address a variety of media: prints, drawings, paintings, etc. Topics might include—but are certainly not limited to—Comic Displays of Power and Authority; Self-Portraiture: the Artist as Comedian; Street Theater; and Popular Prints.
Proposals should include the author’s name, professional affiliation, and contact information; the paper’s title; a brief abstract (150 words or less); keywords; a one-page curriculum vitae; and any A/V requirements. Please send proposals to both organizers by July 17th: Sandra Cheng [[email protected]] and Kimberlee A. Cloutier-Blazzard [[email protected]].
Notification Date: July 31st

🤝 Sir Jim Ratcliffe met members of our Fans’ Advisory Board and leaders of the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust at Old Trafford on Monday, to introduce himself and hear from supporters.
Brentford FC's remarkable rise to The Premier League is a testament to the power of data-driven strategy, spearheaded by owner Matthew Benham. His innovative approach, combining analytics with football management, has disrupted traditional methods and yielded impressive results.
However, as Benham considers selling his stake in the club, questions arise about the sustainability of this success without his visionary leadership. The author of a new book, Alex Duff, on the club’s remarkable rise gives Off The Pitch the inside track.
1. How did Matthew Benham's data-driven strategy transform Brentford Football Club?
Benham implemented a rigorous analytics-driven approach to decision-making and player acquisitions. By leveraging statistical models and hiring key personnel with diverse backgrounds, such as Mark Warburton and Rasmus Ankersen, Brentford adopted new techniques that improved team performance and strategic decision-making.
2. What challenges did Benham face in implementing his strategy?
Benham encountered significant resistance from traditional football culture, which was skeptical of data-driven methods. His ideas often clashed with established norms, leading to conflicts with management. To circumvent this, Benham acquired FC Midtjylland in Denmark, where he successfully tested and refined his strategies before fully implementing them at Brentford.
3. What is the potential impact of Benham's departure on Brentford FC?
Benham's potential sale of Brentford raises concerns about the club's future without his direct influence. The integration of Smartodds, his betting intelligence company, with the club has been crucial to their success. Maintaining this "umbilical cord" of data analytics expertise is vital.
