An asteroid is a minor planet an object that is neither a true planet nor a comet that orbits within the inner Solar System. They are rocky, metallic or icy bodies with no atmosphere. Sizes and shapes of asteroids vary significantly, ranging from 1-meter rocks to a dwarf planet almost 1000 km in diameter roughly one million known asteroids. The greatest number are located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, approximately 2 to 4 AU from the Sun, in the main asteroid belt. Asteroids are generally classified to be of three types: C-type, M-type, and S-type. These were named after and are generally identified with carbonaceous, metallic, and silicaceous compositions, respectively. The size of asteroids varies greatly; the largest, Ceres, is almost 1,000 km (600 mi) across and qualifies as a dwarf planet. Galaxy Tech. ❗Rare close asteroid approach tomorrow, just in time for #AsteroidDay The asteroid 2024 MK is between 120 and 260 m in size and will fly safely past Earth on Saturday 29 June during the height of this year’s Asteroid Day activities. The asteroid was discovered about two weeks ago on 16 June 2024. An asteroid this size could do significant damage if it were to impact Earth. While are safe from this asteroid, the late discovery shows why we need to keep improving our near-Earth object (NEO) observation capabilities. More on the close approach 👉 https://lnkd.in/gnqsNgUQ #KeepingTrack At ESA, the Near-Earth Objects Coordination Centre (https://neo.ssa.esa.int/) maintains a list of all known upcoming close approaches of NEO objects and classifies how rare they are. 2024 MK is the only one currently in the ‘rare’ category. Check out the full list 👉 https://lnkd.in/eydbmTkF

30th June - International Asteroid Day. On June 30, International Asteroid Day will have everyone looking toward the skies. The holiday was founded after the 2014 release of the film 51 Degrees North, which explores what would happen if an asteroid were to strike London. The film’s creative team (many of whom are scientists) wanted to raise more awareness about the threat of asteroids to earth, and how we can help protect ourselves. To make that happen, they formed a foundation, and in 2015, they celebrated the world’s first International Asteroid Day. There are over one million asteroids in space that could potentially strike the earth, but modern scientists have only discovered about one percent of them. To combat this, Asteroid Day’s founders, as well as a host of accomplished scientists, created the 100X Asteroid Declaration. The declaration aims for scientists to work to increase the rate of asteroid discovery to 100,000 per year within a decade. International Asteroid Day focuses on spreading the word of the declaration and helping fellow Earthlings prepare for a potential asteroid impact.
