What a great approach to sustainable care which will undoubtedly enhance healthcare access by integrating efficient, eco-friendly practices and technologies, reducing costs, and improving care delivery. This approach should ensure long-term health system viability, making quality care more accessible. We witnessed this in metro Atlanta several years back with similar merger’s.

The first step to better health care and access for people across our state is collaboration with like-minded organizations that can help us deliver better value and improved access. That’s why it’s so meaningful that UNC Health and Blue Cross NC shared today that we’ve reached a long-term agreement to continue our long-standing work together.   What does this mean for North Carolinians?   1. Rural areas benefit from this collaboration. All Blue Cross NC members will have access to UNC Health, no matter where they live in the state, and the four-year agreement will enable further collaboration on new ways to improve care and access for patients across North Carolina, especially in rural areas. 2. Strong collaboration matters for our state. Together, our organizations have joined forces including conducting a clinical study to improve food security and chronic conditions and creating a physician’s assistant master’s degree for veteran medics at the UNC School of Medicine..     3. Stability provides peace of mind. UNC Health and Blue Cross NC have worked together for many years. Logan Regional Medical Center, located in Logan, West Virginia, is crucial to keeping residents in this small community healthy from the moment they are born. At a time when maternal care is disappearing in rural areas, it has three labor suites and a nine-bed nursery. LRMC, along with other rural hospitals across the country, is a cornerstone of the community it serves. Faced with unique challenges, however, these hospitals are dwindling in number -- and proposals by some in Congress threaten to lower their numbers even more. If you are lucky enough to be a part of a rural community that still has a hospital, and if you are particularly lucky enough to have that hospital still deliver babies, take a moment to consider what it would be like if that hospital did not exist, or if it no longer delivered babies. How much longer would it take for you or your family member to receive care in a crisis? How much further will an expectant mother need to travel for maternity care and delivery? Then, take a moment to imagine the economic impact of the closure of that hospital, on the overall community. If you are not involved in advocating to keep care local, please consider how you might begin to consider it. #ruralhealthcare #ruralcommunities

You know what would be a fun and informative assignment? Trying to estimate the economic value of the contributions of Catholic religious sisters to health care (or you could choose another field). You could set some parameters. E.g., within geographical location X (maybe your home city, county, state or province), from year YYYY to ZZZZ. Today, U.S. News & World Report presented its first-ever list of the “Best Regional Hospitals for Equitable Access” at The State of Equity in America meeting in Washington, DC. As the “global authority in hospital rankings and consumer advice,” US News' analysis revealed 53 hospitals across 26 states serving socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. Recognition was granted to the institutions that excelled in providing access to high-caliber care, resulting in exceptional patient outcomes. California ranked highest in number of hospitals that made the cut, with 7 recognized institutions, followed by 4 in North Carolina and 3 in Arizona, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, and South Carolina. Honing in on US cities with more than 1 hospital included, Baltimore, Detroit, St Louis, Tucson, and Tulsa each had 2 institutions listed.
