This is especially important when you are not travelling on your own. Being transparent with your recruitment consultant as to what passport you are travelling on, and what passport your family members carry when moving with you can be the difference between starting the rotation on time and being delayed. Humour, Risk & Change I started my career at Bell Canada in 1989. I was in the Engineering department for 3 years. Bell Canada went through major restructuring in the mid 90’s and my position was going to be eliminated. Fortunately I had a hand in designing the new structure so it didn't feel like it was totally out of my control (Thank you Bill Hollett). For reasons I don’t understand, the Director of HR offered me a role in HR to help the company with the restructuring (Thank you Wendy Merklinger). I had the benefit of working with a consultant by the name of Mainstream Access. They showed me a video series called ‘Humour, Risk and Change’ by a trainer by the name of C.W. Metcalf. (Thank you Don Tyler). These videos were how I learned about Viktor Frankl and the book ‘Man’s Search for Meaning’. He referenced the story of Frankl and another prisoner. The other prisoner stopped to admire the sunset. Frankl became anxious as he worried about the prisoner as he would be beaten if he did not keep marching. The prisoner did not care, he was absorbed in the beauty of the sunset. This story had a profound effect on me. Metcalf also talked about the power of humour. He referenced United Airlines 232 which crash landed in Sioux City in 1989. The flight had lost all hydraulics due to tail engine failure. The pilots (and a passenger who happened to be a flight navigator) steered the plane with rudder pedals. As they approached the Sioux City airport, the tower said 'take any runway you like' and the pilot said 'oh now you want me to pick a runway!' This is why, 34 years later, I'm working on my diploma in Logotherapy. (Thank you Edward Marshall). The 3 Pillars of Logotherapy 1. Freedom of Will (stripped of all other freedoms, we still have the freedom to choose how to look at something and our response to that something). 2. Will to Meaning - Realizing our purpose is a strong motivator. Not knowing what our purpose is does not mean it doesn't exist. It's an exercise in clarification. 3. Meaning in Life - You can't connect the dots until after the fact. Look back on your life with a new set of shades on, you'll see the signs. #engineeringpeakperformance
