When it comes to exploring sex and gender in research, a recent article from @Nature says that it's important to embrace the complexities and "lean in with courage and creativity to interrogate the fascinating complexity of sex- and gender-related impacts. This could make a difference in a diverse set of contexts, including more personalized dosing of prescription medications, better protection for women by air bags in car crashes, and equitable access to health services. It is imperative that researchers engage deeply with the mechanisms and factors that underlie apparent differences between groups, to improve the health of all. Change Management Success Partner I Registered Nurse I Epic Certified Clinical Informatics Specialist | EMR Training | Healthcare IT
Digital Health Canada's Wednesday Webinar today focused on Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI)'s fantastic work on modernizing sex and gender data standards. Shannon O'Connor and Dan Simic did a deep dive of sex and gender data collection and its use for administrative, clinical, and analytical purposes through a Pan-Canadian lens. They shared with us the progress made so far and the challenges that remain. As we strive for more equitable healthcare, these conversations and the push towards modernization and alignment of policies are critical. As CIHI powers through to carry this good work beyond the province of B.C., I am excited to see how other provinces, territories, and regions respond. I look forward to the release of the Pan-Canadian GSSO in September. Dan also touched on the importance of Change Management and Electronic Health Records to transform clinical workflows, messaging standards, and the adoption and implementation of inclusive data standardization. As this project moves forward, a variety of change management concepts will need to be utilized to meet the needs of the various parties involved to create as seamless a transition as possible. This work is complex and it will require collaboration with clinicians, administrators, key stakeholders, patients, and third party vendors. #digitalhealthcanada #CIHI #ChangeManagement #electronichealthrecords #EMR #EHR #ActingforEquity #informatics #healthinformatics #nursinginformatics

Our recent publication in CHEST highlighted how the Australian and New Zealand Intensive care unit (ICU) database can’t accurately include trans or intersex people. Options of Male, Female and ‘Third Sex’ are not interpretable when no data is collected on patient gender. ICU and all health databases need to improve how sex, gender, and variations of sex characteristics are recorded. Accurately including trans people and people with innate variations of sex characteristics is important to ensuring access to safe, appropriate health care.
