One of the trends sited in this year's BentoBox restaurant report is the use of messy photos on social media. Restaurants are ditching the pristine white plates and perfectly garnished food in favor or half eaten pasta dishes and drops of spilled wine on the table. For me, it depends on the type of restaurant I'm shooting for. At a high-end steak house I'm going to continue to shoot the beautifully plated dishes just as the chef intended. The food is a work of art, and I want to show it that way. But I love the trend of messier photos for restaurants that have a more casual feel and are the next up and coming hot spot in town. I stumbled upon this NY Times article about trends in menu design and as soon as I saw it, I knew I would want to share it. It's a beautifully designed web page. It's nothing like the standard format we're used to seeing on news websites and I love it for that. The article is interactive, showcasing examples of every trend mentioned. But there's one trend in particular that I would love to dive into a bit deeper: Small font sizes. I have an inkling the reason so many menus are showing up with type that's too small is because so many restaurant menus are being designed by non-designers, and designers without a formal education. So, here are some quick and dirty guidelines to follow if you ever find yourself placing text on a document that's meant for print: 1. Necessary information should never be smaller than a size 8 font. If the font you're using is thin, lightweight, or a script font, increase the minimum size to 10. 2. Consider your audience. If the document is meant to be read by an older crowd, increase the font size by at least 2 points. 3. Print it out and ask people if they can read it without trouble. Ask people of varying ages for the best sample. That's it! If you follow those 3 simple rules, you'll be well on your way to legible text within your document that doesn't leave your audience squinting and straining to read. P.S. Does anyone else remember the app Stumble Upon? It was an ingenious way to kill time and discover cool websites back in the day.
