Camilla Stronati OECD Education and Skills Thanks so much for organising this seminar. It was very interesting to hear such a well-informed debate about the difficult issues around balancing choice and coherence in curriculum and qualifications. Look forward to reading the new OECD Spotlight publication on this issue, too! A couple of key dilemmas stood out for me: 1. How to increase student choice in a way that doesn't lead to unhealthy competition between schools and resultant over-provision that becomes difficult to resource? 2. What broad, transferable, or interdisciplinary skills and knowledge might be necessary to provide coherence and ensure student pathways remain open - while still providing the student choice that is so necessary for motivation at upper secondary level? AS colleagues highlighted, this is definitely an art and not a science!

2023 WORLD TEACHERS DAY THEME IS SO IMPRESSIVE: "The Teachers we want for the Education we need" The phrase "teachers we want for the education we need" suggests a desire for educators who align with the specific educational goals and values of a community or society. It implies that the qualities, skills, and teaching methods of teachers should be tailored to meet the unique needs and aspirations of students and the broader educational system. In essence, it emphasizes the importance of selecting and supporting teachers who can provide the type of education that is most beneficial and relevant for learners and society as a whole.

Being new to Academies Enterprise Trust I can be a bit more dispassionate about these results as they are not my doing. They really are extraordinary, especially for KS2. When you have schools in areas of deprivation you could argue that doing well means reaching the national averages. To be 15 percentage points above the national average is quite something: a testament to the work done by teams across the Trust. And, the results for disadvantaged children are even more special. Seven percentage points higher than the 2023 average across the Trust, and nine above the national average for 2024. What’s even more pleasing is that there is no intention of stopping where we are. The ambition is hugely engaging to work with, so watch out for more in 2025…. …every child really does matter.
We're incredibly proud to share this year’s record primary results reflecting the brilliant work happening across our primary schools. Click here for a breakdown of the results: https://bit.ly/3SeMIk3 We are celebrating our best ever results across the network in primary: • 89% of our year 1 pupils passed the phonics screening check, a 3 percentage point increase on last year. • 76% of our key stage 2 students met the expected standard in reading, writing and maths, a 6 percentage point increase on 2023. We are particularly proud of our results for disadvantaged children, with those qualifying for pupil premium performing better than non disadvantaged pupils nationally. A huge thank you to our school leaders, teachers and all staff in our 31 primary schools, this is a real testament to your hard work.
