In Michigan, nearly 12% of people face food insecurity, and many of our community members face barriers to accessing nutritious food. Food insecurity has soared over the past few years, making it more important than ever to create a future where our food system is equitable, sustainable, and equipped to meet southeast Michigan’s needs. At our foundation, we support a number of nonprofit organizations, including Fair Food Network, Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan, Forgotten Harvest, Capuchin Soup Kitchen, and Make Food Not Waste, who are working to increase food access, destigmatized food insecurity, and provide education and resources so that people throughout our region can thrive. Did You Know each meal served during our #GivingbackFridays costs just  R14 per plate? As part of our external services, we focus extensively on food security. #GivingBackFridays is our weekly dedication to serving a hot, nutritious meal to those in need in our community. Currently, our #GivingBackFridays costs R7000 per week.  We serve about 500 people, which comes down to R14 per plate served. A little does go a long way, and although rising food prices continue to affect our budget, we work hard to stretch every rand by negotiating with grocery suppliers to get the lowest prices on food. The Kentucky Bar Association’s Young Lawyers’ Division (“YLD”) is preparing to kick off the 2024 Legal Food Frenzy Campaign. The Legal Food Frenzy is an annual partnership between the YLD, the Attorney General’s Office, and Feeding Kentucky. Since its inception in 2017, the Legal Food Frenzy has raised over $360,000 for Kentuckians fighting food insecurity. Each year, the need becomes greater. Kentuckians continue to fight food insecurity daily. In fact, one out of every six adults and one out of every five children in Kentucky face food insecurity – not to mention access to healthy food options. Food banks across the state provide access to those individuals who may not know from where their next meal will come. Each individual dollar raised purchases 3.5 pounds of food. No donation is too small to make a big difference in the lives of your friends and neighbors who face food insecurity. Last year, Northern Kentucky firms raised over ten thousand dollars for local area food banks. This March, I hope we can expand our efforts to include firms that have not previously been involved. This year’s Legal Food Frenzy will run from March 13 – March 29. In recognition of today’s Hunger Action Day in Palm Beach County, Rales JFS employees participated in the #SNAPChallenge this month. By living only on the average daily SNAP allowance benefit, participants found themselves forced to make food shopping choices on a limited budget and attempted to stay healthy without adequate resources. Rales JFS Chief Operating Office, Beth Levine, described living on $9 a day for four days to be a significant challenge, requiring careful meal planning and budget shopping. Breakfast consisted of oatmeal ($1.35/day) and tea ($0.25/day). Lunch included hard-boiled eggs, lettuce, cucumber, and tomatoes ($2.75/day). Afternoon snacks were apples ($2.49/day). Dinner options varied between Publix chicken, broccoli, sweet potatoes, chicken breasts, and cauliflower, totaling $15.90 for four dinners. As a result, the four days' expenses came to $34.79, with much hunger experienced in the evenings. Family does not let family go hungry. Retail Association of Maine & Maine Grocers and Food Producers Association Launch Maine Business Relief Fund Aiding Small Businesses Affected by Recent Storm   Augusta, ME (January 2, 2024)— In the wake of December 18th’s devastating storm, affectionately dubbed the "Grinch," the Retail Association of Maine (RAM) and the Maine Grocers and Food Producers Association (MGFPA) are taking proactive steps to support the numerous businesses affected across the state. The storm brought severe flooding, road washouts, and prolonged power outages, resulting in substantial losses for retailers, grocers, restaurants, and other small enterprises.   Inspired by the successful relief efforts in Vermont following a similar catastrophe, RAM and MGFPA are proud to announce the launch of the Maine Business Relief Fund. This initiative aims to provide crucial financial assistance to Maine's small businesses in their recovery from the storm's impact. The fund will offer grants ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 to cover expenses such as equipment replacement, operating expenses, supplies, and assistance with cleanup, etc. The goal is to help meet immediate needs until further support is available.    “Maine’s retailers and small businesses have been through a lot for a few years now, but a storm like this during the final week of holiday sales was an incredible blow to many of our small businesses. It is our hope that the Maine Business Relief Fund will help provide some necessary support to help clean up, replenish lost inventory, and help get them back on track in 2024,” stated Curtis Picard, President and CEO of the Retail Association of Maine.   Program Highlights: Modeled after Vermont's relief program, which raised $800,000 and distributed grants of up to $10,000 to impacted businesses. Businesses will be eligible for financial grants of up to $10,000 as early as January 2024. We have a story in the latest issue of Neighbourhood Media detailing all the work we do via Addison Road Food Pantry Camperdown, our low-cost grocery store which makes use of rescued, donated and purchased food to support the local community and its needs. The story (link below) shows how we help feed people from Mission Australia's Common Ground housing project and the nearby Johanna O’Dea Court, a multi-storey NSW Family and Community Services apartment block. It also explains how we serve people living on a tight budget in Camperdown and Glebe, as well as people who come to the pantry from right across the City of Sydney LGA. Most of all, the story is a celebration of our monthly Addi Road 'Let's Get Cooking' sessions (AKA "the Cook-Up"), which offers 260 free hot meals for Mission Australia and Joanna O'Dea residents, as well as those shopping at our Addi Road Food Pantry Camperdown. These sessions involve a monthly cooking demo inside the Common Ground building. Food literacy is the ultimate goal behind Addi Road's Let's Get Cooking program. As well as simply providing a free hot meal (and dessert) each month, we look at helping people to shop AND cook with often very limited funds. Each month there are easy recipes on offer (and ready to be tasted) along extra tips for stocking people's kitchen cupboards; a list of essentials to facilitate simple, inexpensive and nutritious recipes that will match whatever Addi Road Food Pantry might have in stock. It's about building an integrated food ecology for people battling.
