As we gather to celebrate Juneteenth, we honor the day when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This historic moment on June 19, 1865, marked the end of a dark chapter in American history and the beginning of a new era of freedom and possibilities. Juneteenth is a time to reflect on the resilience, strength, and enduring spirit of those who fought for liberation and justice. It's also a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and the importance of standing united against all forms of oppression. Today, as we commemorate the end of slavery, we also celebrate the rich cultural heritage and significant contributions of African Americans to our society. Juneteenth is not just a day of remembrance, but a call to action for us to continue working towards a more inclusive and equitable future. Let's use this day to educate ourselves, uplift our communities, and honor the legacy of those who paved the way for the freedoms we enjoy today. Together, we can build a world where liberty and justice are truly for all. #justiceforall #junetheethcelebration

🌍 Today is Juneteenth! 🌍 As a woman of mixed American and Caribbean heritage, Juneteenth holds deep significance for me. It marks the day, June 19th, 1865, when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved African Americans in Texas, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. While the 13th Amendment officially ended slavery in December 1865, many freed people continued to face severe hardships and systemic injustices. It’s a celebration of liberation and resilience, reminding us of the ongoing journey towards justice and equality. Personally, it’s a time for me to honor my ancestors’ struggles and celebrate their spirit of perseverance. PS. I’m pictured here in Treme, one of the oldest African American neighborhoods in the US. This area is rich in cultural heritage and significance, embodying the spirit of resilience celebrated on Juneteenth. Juneteenth serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in our workplaces and communities. Had you heard of Juneteenth before? 🌟 #Juneteenth #DiversityandInclusion #EquityAtWork

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in 1865. While it's an American holiday, its message of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing struggle for equality resonates deeply within Canada and across the globe. Canada has its own history of slavery, and the legacy of systemic racism continues to affect Black communities today. Juneteenth serves as a powerful reminder that the fight for justice and equality is far from over and is a collective responsibility. By acknowledging Juneteenth, Canadians can: 1. **Reflect on Our Shared History:** Understand the impact of slavery and the contributions of Black Canadians who fought for freedom and justice. 2. **Promote Solidarity:** Stand in solidarity with Black Americans and honor the interconnectedness of our struggles for civil rights. 3. **Foster Education and Awareness:** Use this day as an opportunity to educate ourselves and others about the history and ongoing issues of racism and discrimination in Canada. 4. **Commit to Action:** Renew our commitment to anti-racism work, advocating for policies and practices that promote equity and justice for all. Let's use Juneteenth as a moment to reflect, learn, and take meaningful action towards creating a more inclusive and equitable society. Each year in Canada, September 30th marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day honours the Indigenous children who never returned home from residential schools, survivors of the residential school system, their families ,and communities. As a feminist organization based in Canada and engaged with feminist movements and activists around the world, the violent legacy of colonialism requires us to critically engage with and challenge our histories, recognize the historical and ongoing harm that is the legacy of colonial violence and oppression, and continue to support efforts to uncover the truth. Ahead of September 30, we're sharing this month’s What We’re Reading. It focuses on decolonization, which is critical for healing and reimagined futures characterized by equity and justice.
