Prada started selling these $650 daddy boxers. And although it might look ridiculous and ugly as hell... Here are 3 things fashion brands can learn from this move. Nº 1: Free PR. By selling ridiculously ugly and high priced items, brands get free exposure because blog and media will talk about how crazy this is. And even though the product itself is crazy, the brand being talked about is what matters. Same thing happened with Balenciaga when they launched their Triple S shoe, and it turned out a lot of people actually bought them. Nº2: Reinforce their price positioning When you list a $650 underwear on your website, people assume you are within the luxury segment of the market, which reinforce your position and help on the price perception of your overall collection. Seeing a $1000 T-Shirt by Prada makes sense if they sell some $650 boxers. Nº3: Make them standout Usually, these outlier items have some crazy design or technicality to justify their price point, which helps the brand develop a specific identity and also show some kind of expertise and no-like-others approach to product design. Taking the Triple S example, a lot of brands started copying the design, even if it seems crazy and not appealing at first. Do you need to sell $650 boxers to be talked about? No. But for your next collection, you can think of one unique and limited item that might generate a conversation and drive traffic and awareness to your brand. #fashion #ecommerce #branding
