Streaming's share of TV usage in the U.S. reached a record high in May in a new Nielsen report; FAST platforms Tubi and Roku Channel hit their highest marks. Typical for this time of year, overall TV usage was down just slightly on a monthly basis (-2.4%), but a year-over-year comparison showed a slight increase in time spent watching TV in May ( 1.4%). Across viewing categories, streaming exhibited the most growth, adding 0.4 pt. to its share of TV usage to record a new high watermark of 38.8%. Streaming usage climbed 8% compared with May 2023, and the category has added 2.4 share points to its share of TV. Nielsen Study: The Evolution of Television Viewership from Broadcast to Streaming 📅 Nielsen published this study in April of this year, and I had forgotten to write about it. Today, I stumbled upon it again. 🤦♂️ 📺 The study discusses the changing landscape of television viewership, highlighting the shift from traditional TV channels to streaming services. Here's a summary of the key points: 📡 Broadcast vs. Streaming: The study reveals that people can distinguish between live sports broadcasts on traditional TV channels and streaming platforms. This distinction reflects the growing popularity of alternate media sources worldwide. 🌍 🔄 Changing Preferences: Last year in August, 34.5% of people watched regular TV, but by April of this year, this figure dropped to 31.5%. Notably, this trend primarily applies to news-watching individuals and a slightly older generation. 👵📉 📊 Parameters of Change: If we exclude those who fall into the two categories mentioned above, the percentage of people watching regular TV drops even further, to less than 5%. 🚫📺 🚀 Streaming Success: Streaming services continue to thrive, with more people switching from TV to these platforms each year. YouTube leads the pack, followed closely by Netflix. 📈📺📱 📝 In summary, the study suggests that within the next 30 years, it will be increasingly challenging to find individuals who exclusively watch TV without any other forms of entertainment.
