A Statement from Julie Kennedy Oehlert and Kathleen Sitzman, authors of System Innovation: A Holistic Approach to Disruption with Love and Human Caring in recognition of National Nurses Week 2024: "National Nurses Week is our time to recognize the integral role nurses play in the health and well-being of individuals, families, communities, the nation, and the world every single day. While we take this time to honor nurses and the nursing profession, it is critical to also recognize the day-to-day challenges that many nurses experience as they persevere in work environments where barriers to care, and nurses’, voices, concerns, and insights are often trivialized, ignored, or punished through organizational cultures that that reinforce “power over” rather than “power with” leadership and team dynamics. “Leadership is not power over, it is the power with and the power to create caring environments through love” (p. 25). It is time to re-imagine and re-create healthcare systems that are genuinely focused on the holistic well-being of leaders, nurses, patients, and others engaged in the giving and the receiving of care. 💯! Our nurses deserve consistent recognition and support for their dedication and advocacy in patient care. As nurse leaders, it's crucial to regularly uplift our staff nurses beyond occasional gestures like pizza parties. While enjoyable, these events lack the depth needed to truly connect and appreciate our team. Instead, aim for meaningful interactions that foster a strong bond. Take the time to engage with your team during quieter moments, demonstrating your commitment to enhancing their practice. Surprise wellness checks coupled with personalized recognition can make a significant impact. Remember, our staff nurses form the bedrock of our healthcare system, embodying the values that drive positive patient outcomes. For examples of what “going above and beyond” looks like, please keep reading… Robyn (our Nurse & Care Manager) is too humble to brag about what she does every day, so I’m going to do it for her and share a few examples (suggesting you read ‘til the end, the last one still gets me). Challenge 1: A client of ours was a fall-risk and discombobulated. We had to be there 50 hours per week just to keep her safe. - The solution: Following Robyn’s recommendations, the doctors reevaluated medications and made the adjustments she suggested! - Today: The client is back to independence! It was the medications and the doctors agreed with Robyn! Our main caregiver is still there 20 hours per week just for some companionship and fun activities, but the client is SO much better! Challenge #2: An out-of-town family was extremely concerned about their dad since he was all alone and they couldn’t be with him yet so they hired us. - The solution: Robyn coached our team of caregivers to keep him safe and provide daily updates to the family including photos, notes & suggestions. Robyn even drove & joined him at doctor’s appointments to ask questions and report back to the family, and provided her own weekly reports & tips for the family. - Today, the client has graduated off our services, he finally got to move to be closer to his family, and the family is forever grateful. Challenge #3: A client was battling depression and could no longer maintain her once-beautiful backyard garden. - The solution: Robyn was off work one morning, and we agreed to meet at the client’s home that afternoon. When I arrived, Robyn was wearing jeans and a t-shirt, and holding a rake and trash bag. She had been there all morning clearing out the garden of weeds, and making the garden look wonderful again. The client was nearly in tears as she sat & watched Robyn begin to restore her garden it to its former beauty. - Today, the client’s depression has subsided (med adjustments helped!) and her garden hasn’t looked this great in years. I had to emphasize to the client’s family that yard work is not a “normal” task in the home care industry, it’s just that Robyn just can’t help herself sometimes LOL. To Robyn, and to all of the wonderful healthcare workers & caregivers who go above and beyond even when no one is looking, THANK YOU.

Even if your nursing journey takes the scenic route, remember that progress is progress. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise. It's essential to recognize that taking longer than others doesn't equate to failure. Day 1 Nurses week- I was demoralised. At my place of work, it's my first time celebrating the nurses week with them. It turned out to be an embarrassing moment. All activities evenly planned out and today (day 1) happens to be a symposium day. Themed: Our Nurses our Future. The economic power of care.... It is required that every unit should appoint someone to present on the topic. unfortunately for my unit, no one was appointed, no update was given, until the last minute I was asked to present. At this minute? not prepared for anything? I asked myself🤨🤨 Well, I just have to step in and say one or few words I reasoned. so I decide to talk on the challenges affecting our nurses and our future, ways to handling it, deducing the context using my unit as a case study. unfortunately, I was shut off and felt demorilized with the loud statement "Your topic isn't in line with the theme, there is no need for it". Not even giving the opportunity to understand my driven context. Well, I felt bad😊😊 I don't think this nurses week will a vibe for me as I expected it. But not withstanding, I will present my ideas in my next post, cos I won't let it die in me, If they dont want to hear it, someone here will read and appreciate it 😁😁 Happy nurses week to all descendants of Nightingale!!!!! #confidence #nursesweek #celebration #International

6 MAY, NATIONAL NURSE DAY: Today kicks off National Nurse Week. THESE PEOPLE. If you've ever been in a position, personally or someone close to you, where you've seen these people in action, then you know. They are truly the unsung heroes! The hours they work, the work they do and the bedside attitude they maintain... gotta say, I'm at awe with anyone called to this vocation. You gals and guys have something extra that isn't something most people are born with and it's beyond special. Thank you for all you do! To celebrate today, celebrate them. If you're visiting a hospital or doctor's office, be sure to tell them thank you. If you're visiting a loved one, pickup an extra bouquet to leave at their station. It's their job to make sure everyone around them is feeling better. We should be doing this all the time but especially today, this week let's check in on them and see if there's a way we can brighten their day. So, now that you know, find some tequila and shout SALUD!
